Collections

This collection includes both processed series and unprocessed accessions of records created by the Earl Gregg Swem Library at the College of William and Mary including those from component offices and individual staff members. A majority of the collection contains correspondence from the dean of the libraries and library administration. Inventories for some series and accessions are available in the Special Collections Research Center and links to PDFs of those inventories can be provided when available.

Papers of Eleanor "Ellie" Schaul, a prominent West Virginia artist and arts advocate. Includes original artwork by Schaul such as sketches, paintings, and posters in Series 1, Original Artwork. Features materials from art shows Schaul attended or was featured in, like programs and correspondence with organizers. Also includes materials she created in the process of developing exhibitions, like correspondence with artists, documentation of items to be displayed, and thematic research. Exhibition-related materials, which include audiovisual content, are in Series 2, Art Show Material. Lastly, the collection includes general documentation of Schaul's 60+ year career, like photo albums, newspaper clippings of stories about her work in the Charleston community, and correspondence with artists and arts supporters. These items, which include digital content, are in Series 3, Career Documentation.
Series 1 materials are located in boxes 1, 2, and 6 and oversize folder 1. Series 2 materials are located in boxes 3 and 6 and oversize folder 2. Series 3 materials are located in boxes 4, 5, and 6 and oversize folder 3.

Published issues of the zine Porch Beers and other smaller zines created by queer author Elliott Stewart and Porch Beers Press. These zines cover a variety of topics relating to specific aspects of Appalachian culture through a queer and transmasculine perspective. Topics include fandom, food, radical, unapologetic queerness in Appalachia, anti-fascism, and many more. Nine zines of varying sizes are included within this collection, being published from the early 2010s onward. Stewart grew up in Huntington, West Virginia, and then moved to Tennessee. Stewart has been making zines since age 14, and continues to make musings on his life and the world around him through the eyes of a queer trans man.

This collection includes materials from Dr. Emory L. Kemp's career of researching, documenting, and preserving historic structures. Kemp was a practicing civil engineer from 1952-1959, then taught civil engineering, historic preservation, and the history of technology from 1962-2003 at West Virginia University. He served as an expert consultant for the preservation of many historic engineering structures, including bridges, waterways, and mills. He also published regularly and remained active in several professional organizations.
