Marguerite Roberts Collection, 1924/1980

8.42 Linear Feet Collection is arranged in folders in 18 archival boxes.
Dr. Marguerite Roberts was a University of Richmond faculty member and dean of Westhampton College, and she was also a noted Thomas Hardy scholar. This collection includes years of research on Hardy and his contemporaries as well as his second wife, Florence Dugdale Hardy. Copies of Roberts' manuscripts for her dissertation, Thomas Hardy and the Theater; and her books, Tess and the Theater, Hardy's Poetic Drama and the Theater, and Florence Hardy and the Max Gate Circle, are included. The collection also contains Dr. Roberts' correspondence with publishers and her requests for permission to publish. She carried on a long correspondence with Mrs. Florence Hardy, Lady Tweedsmuir, and other Hardy scholars, in addition to letters from actors and producers.

Correspondence, 1971/2001

Series 1: Correspondence contains material from 1971 to 1997. It consists largely of correspondence from other scholars to Rachels regarding manuscripts and mutual research subjects such as euthanasia and animal rights. There is a significant amount of correspondence from numerous scholars regarding Rachels' 1975 article "Active and Passive Euthanasia." A large amount of correspondence from book and journal editors regarding the publishing of Rachels' work is also present. A smaller amount of correspondence exists regarding translations of his works. This series also contains manuscripts sent to Rachels for review from other scholars.
