Howard wrote for The Collegian student newspaper and served as editor during his junior year as well as working for The Richmond Times-Dispatch and other media outlets. The David E. Howard Journalism Scholarship at the University of Richmond was established by family and friends in his memory.

Dr. Marguerite Roberts was a University of Richmond faculty member and dean of Westhampton College, and she was also a noted Thomas Hardy scholar. This collection includes years of research on Hardy and his contemporaries as well as his second wife, Florence Dugdale Hardy. Copies of Roberts' manuscripts for her dissertation, Thomas Hardy and the Theater; and her books, Tess and the Theater, Hardy's Poetic Drama and the Theater, and Florence Hardy and the Max Gate Circle, are included. The collection also contains Dr. Roberts' correspondence with publishers and her requests for permission to publish. She carried on a long correspondence with Mrs. Florence Hardy, Lady Tweedsmuir, and other Hardy scholars, in addition to letters from actors and producers.
