Collections

The papers of A. E. Dick Howard reflect his academic and professional endeavors. The archives have received five installments of papers from Professor Howard, plus an entire collection: The Papers of A. E. Dick Howard for the Virginia Commission for Constitutional Revision, received in 1981, MSS 81-4. Papers related to the nomination of Judge Robert Bork to the Supreme Court: these files consist of some reports and statements in relation to the nomination of Judge Robert H. Bork to the Supreme Court. Professor Howard was a commentator on the McNeil/Lehrer NewsHour during the confirmation hearings. Bill O'Brien, a student assistant, helped him to collect all of the information. Addendum [a]: Central and Eastern European New Constitutions: these files relate to Howard's involvement on the writing of new constitutions in Central and Eastern Europe at the collapse of the Soviet Union. The files were processed trying to convey their original organization and consist of correspondence, memoranda, working papers and numerous printed materials.

Aerial photographs, 1930-2015, document road projects and corridor studies throughout the Commonwealth and include photographic prints, as well as aerial photo indexes, index maps, mosaic indexes, oblique indexes, overlay books, overlay books, topographic maps and vertical indexes.

Ninety-eight photos with no captions of soldiers in Vietnam and West Germany. The majority of the pictures are of leisure activities such as card games, smoking, writing letters, playing pool, and drinking. Some of the subjects posed with cash, others with raised fists, or by pin-ups on the wall. Twenty-two of the photos are of the town near the barracks.

The papers contain correspondence, legal documents (copies), clippings, articles, research material, maps, and photographs concerning the Ivy Creek Natural Area and its history as the River View Farm owned by the Carr family (African Americans in late nineteenth century), including the original purchase by the Nature Conservancy, the formation of the Ivy Creek Foundation, and its administration of the property.

This collection contains four programs and eight photographs documenting mid-twentieth-century African American life in Roanoke and Wytheville, Virginia. Two programs for Debutante Balls hosted by "The Altruists," a club for Black women in Roanoke, are dated 1954 and 1977. The Altruist Club program for 1954 has "Stella Ednise Miller" in blue ink on the cover. A 1958 pamphlet for a Virginia Congress Colored P.T.A. annual work conference held at Scott Memorial School in Wytheville discusses "The P.T.A. Role in Fields of Education and Community." A program for the Lucy Addison High School Choir's annual Christmas concert is dated 1964. Eight undated printed photographs range in subject matter. Six photographs that are in color feature children sightseeing, a man seated with two children, a museum visit, a woman standing alongside two children, a boy smiling, and a woman smiling. Two photos in black and white feature four Black men in suits exchanging greetings, and a group of young Black children posed in rows with their names written in ink on the photograph.

Papers of author Agnes Smith (1906-1994), including typescript of "An Edge of the Forest", a children's book published in 1959, covers for the book, and a typescript draft of a television script prepared from the book by BBC for the program "Adventures in English." There are also two letters regarding BBC use of the book (1965-66) and six short stories by Smith, generally titled "Engagements and Obituaries."

This collection consists of files compiled in preparing the history of the Cooperative Extension Service entitled College of the Fields: Highlights of the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service, 1914-1980. Included in the collection are: lists of county agents (1914-80); correspondence, articles, speeches and other items from the files of Ella Agnew, first home demonstration agent in the U.S.; information on Seaman Knapp, T.O. Sandy, Maude Wallace, and other pioneers of extension work; information on Negro extension work, 4-H, Black Extension Homemakers Club, Virginia Extension Homemakers Council, and home demonstration work; typed manuscripts of articles and speeches by John R. Hutcheson; photographs of home demonstration work and the people involved; publications consulted for the history; and a rough draft of the history with margin notes and editing.
