Collections

This collection contains diplomas, certificates, photographs, newspaper clippings, a gold watch and a gold medal, a scrapbook, and many other pieces of memorabilia that belonged to Arthur J. Morris, class of 1901 and a benefactor of the University of Virginia Law Library.

The collection contains seven black-and-white photographs depicting William & Mary graduates from the class of 1925. Materials also include Arthur J. Winder's Alumni medallion from the class of 1925, a 50th reunion Colonial Re-Echo with a class directory, campus map, and biographical sketches.

This collection contains photographs, photo albums, letters, certificates, and a program belonging to Arthur L. Wharton and his wife, Betty Lou Golden Wharton, relating to Arthur's career as a mapmaker for the Central Intelligence Agency and documenting their family life.

The Arthur M. Squires Papers, 1888-1987 (bulk 1940-1987), consist of extensive correspondence, unpublished research reports, lectures, trip reports, reprints, trip diaries (1968-1982), photographs (1979) from his trip to China, daily work books (1959-1981), and subject files spanning entire career. This collection is unprocessed.

Correspondence of Arthur Spencer Dayton (1887-1948), prominent Charleston lawyer and avid book collector. The majority of the correspondence is with American and English book dealers and concerns Dayton's purchase of rare books including Shakespeare's four folios as well as other rare Shakespeare volumes; a comprehensive collection of Mark Twain rare editions; Jane Austen rare materials; the 15th century biblical text The Nuremburg Chronicle; and many more rare volumes. Dayton's collection of rare books forms the basis of the West Virginia and Regional History Center's Rare Books Collection. Most correspondence takes the form of copies of business letters, but also includes personal letters to friends and colleagues. The personal letters concern Dayton's view on current politics and the law, health matters, philanthropy, religion, and legal decisions. The content of the boxes of correspondence is as follows: Box 1, ca. 1898-1960; Box 2, 1937-1940; Box 3, 1941-1945; Box 4, 1946-1948; and Box 5, 1949-1952, and undated. The correspondence in Box 5 is mostly from Dayton's wife, Ruth, regarding insuring art and rare materials, as well as the donations of art and rare materials through her charity.

The collection includes two scrapbooks of photographs, postcards, and programs collected by Arthur and H. Leah James while students at the College of William and Mary.

This collection contains twentieth century records pertaining to the life and career of Asa Orin Bishop, long time general manager of sales for company stores at Pocahontas Fuel-Consolidation Coal in Virginia. Records include financial, operational and promotional materials for Pocahontas Fuel (and later, Pocahontas Fuel-Consolidation Coal) and Pocahontas United Methodist Church, as well as a variety of sales training resources. The collection features a range of materials such as photographs, newspapers and clippings, ledger books and correspondence.
