Collections

This collection is composed of the personal papers of College of William and Mary Faculty member William Warner Moss, Jr. It contains correspondence, notes, photographs, recordings, and other material. Featured in the papers are Moss' personal research notes about Ireland, court cases, and other political issues; class lecture notes; clippings about the 1952 football scandal; and subject files related to various Virginia elections.

This collection includes miscellaneous articles on a variety of literary topics. It also includes approximately 25 items from Pusey's wartime duty in Germany in 1945, including eight photographs of Admiral Dönitz's surrender. Additionally, there is a typescript by Pusey entitled Theater in Staunton, Va, 1875-1912.Also contains a signed typescript of his book History of the theater in Staunton, Virginia, known as Grange Hall, the Opera House (1879) and the Beverly Theatre (1905-), from 1875-1912. Chronicles performances (ca. 700) of drama, musical comedy, minstrel shows, vaudeville, and melodrama. Includes names of major actors and playwrights of the shows, such as Warren L. Olivier, Lillie Langtry, Fanny Janauschek, Emma Abbott, Thomas W. Keene, Sol S. Russell, Frank Chanfrau, Otis Skinner, Helena Modjeska, Julia Marlowe, and De Wolf Hopper, and the critical reaction to the performances by Staunton newspapers.

The papers of William Welling document his career as a photographic historian. Welling worked as a journalist for the Hamden Chronicle from 1949-1950 and several of his articles are included in the collection. Series 2 holds correspondence between Welling and prominent photographic historians Helmut Gernsheim (1913-1995) of Lugano, Switzerland and George R. Rinhart. Series 3 includes Welling's extensive collection of photographic history research primarily on the 19th century for his books A Collector's Guide to Nineteenth Century Photographs (1976) and Photography in America: The Formative Years, 1839-1900 (1978). Series 4 and 5 are papers related to the production, promotion, and sale of these two works, while series 6 includes copies of photographs and negatives used for the books. Series 7 includes several years worth of photographic history journals the majority of which are "Photographica" and "In Focus." Series 8 and 9 include research related to other book projects that Welling aspired to write, but did not complete.

The papers of West Virginia's State Superintendent of Free Schools from 1933-1957 includes three boxes of newspaper clipping scrapbooks, 1934-1941, a file of mimeograph bulletins, news releases, reports and circular letters, 1937-1954. There is one box of Trent's college essays.

Correspondence, reports, bulletins, and reports of the Board of Public Works, Utility Assessment Hearing of the State Superintendent of Free Schools from 1933 to 1956. Papers cover such subjects as the foundation program, teachers' salaries, and certification.

This collection consists of two letters written to Betty and Bob Munger of Lexington, VA, from Willie Elizabeth Moose. Also included is a photo of Willie Elizabeth Moose while living in Glasgow, Virginia in the early 20th century. One letter is dated July 6, 1953 and was written while living in Birmingham, Alabama. She states she is homesick and lonely. Says that she "can't put in writing what happens to infuriate and hurt me, but I feel you two will in a way understand much." The letter further details her current living situation which is described as less than ideal. Her second letter is undated but likely 1954 and alludes to living in Washington. She describes missing Rockbridge County and being visited in a dream by Russ [husband?] who appears to be alive based on content of the letter but physically separated from her.

Collection contains items donated by Will Molineux, primarily through the Williamsburg Historic Records Association. Some items are personal papers including newspaper articles, belonging to Will Molineux. The photograph collection documents Williamsburg, Virginia, including James City County and York County. Subjects include people, places, buildings, events, Colonial Williamsburg as well as the College of William & Mary.
