The papers of the noted botanist and former director of the National Arboretum in Washington, D.C., Dr. Henry Thomas Skinner(1907-1984) of Hendersonville, North Carolina, consist of 2,716 items (10 Hollinger boxes, 3 linear feet), 1932-1984. This collection contains correspondence, printed material, articles, talks, photographs, newsclippings, and bound volumes, much of it pertaining to his life's work with ornamental plants (especially the azaleas native to North America), his memberships and activities in professional and horticultural organizations, and his directorship and continuing interest in the Morris Arboretum at the University of Pennsylvania, and the National Arboretum.

Collection contains genealogy of the Poulton Family, published stories, articles, book reviews, books, correspondence with family and friends and news clippings by and relating to John D. Weaver, author, novelist, biographer and West Coast editor of "Travel and Leisure Magazine".

Papers of Louis Arthur Johnson, (1891-1966), Clarksburg lawyer, and Washington, D.C. politician who co-founded the law office of Steptoe & Johnson. Johnson studied law at the University of Virginia and upon graduation immediately took up residence in the booming oil and gas town of Clarksburg, W. Va. and began the firm with Philip P. Steptoe. He served in France and Germany during and immediately after the First World War, and upon his return married Ruth Maxwell from Clarksburg. From 1937-1940 Johnson was the Assistant Secretary of War under President Roosevelt and later served as the second United States Secretary of Defense under President Truman from March 1949 to September 1950. Asked to resign by President Truman, Johnson returned to his law practice in Clarksburg until his death in 1966. This collection is minimally processed.

The papers of George Ring IIIof Fairfax, Virginia, consist of 2,832 items (17 Hollinger boxes, 5.5 linear feet), 1925-1987, chiefly correspondence, printed material, working notebooks, and questionnaires, all pertaining to his membership in the American Rhododendron Societyand his interest in the hybridizers of rhododendrons, both contemporary and past.

This collection includes articles, correspondence, a scrapbook, journals, a manuscript, photographs, an expense ledger, an interview, a diary, biographical sketches, post cards and invitations, and other materials that document the professional life of Henry Hanson. It also includes materials related to the naming of the Henry Hanson building in Jacksonville, Florida.

This addition to the Louis J. Halle, Jr.Collection, consisting of ca. 3,850 items (13 Hollinger boxes; ca. 4.5 linear feet), 1938-1987, contains a chronological correspondence file kept by Louis J. Halle, Jr.'s secretary during his tenure at the Graduate Institute of International Studies, Geneva, Switzerland, topical correspondence, and lecture notes, talks, speeches, articles, and book reviews by Louis J. Halle, Jr.. The composition of this group of papers is very similiar to previous Louis J. Halle, Jr.accessions but the collection contains more material from his tenure in the State Department, departmental correspondence as a professor at the Graduate Institute of International Studies, and many more of his earlier lectures.

The materials in this collection range from 1654 to 1990 and include correspondence, articles, reviews, drafts of published work, photographs and clippings. The bulk of the material can be found in the 1970- 1980 date range. There is extensive information on James Branch Cabell, Ellen Glasgow and the Edgeworth/Mordecai relationship. Activities of the Ellen Glasgow Society and the Virginia Writer's Club, to a lesser extent, are also documented. Clipping for "Rain" RTD 10/31/24 fragile note taken and clipping discarded.
