Correspondence and other papers of Kemble White, one-time law partner of A.B. Fleming, specialist in oil and gas law, counsel for the West Virginia subsidiaries of Standard Oil (Hope Natural Gas, South Penn Oil, and Eureka Pipeline), charter member of the West Virginia Oil and Natural Gas Association, veteran of the Spanish-American War, one-time president of the West Virginia Bar Association; and the West Virginia University Alumni Association. Additional items include: White's notebooks from language and accounting classes taken at the University; correspondence dealing with Mrs. White's gardening activities; drafts of White's proposals for constitutional revision in West Virginia; a Spanish-American War Muster-roll for Company M, 2nd West Virginia Volunteers; and two diaries (ca.1868). Papers of Dr. Margaret Byrnside Ballard (1900-1991), regarding the history of Monroe County, West Virginia, and the Ballard family. As a genealogist and author of local history, she was an avid collector of the historical materials contained in this collection, most of which relate to her family and Monroe County. The collection includes personal papers, business records, historical and genealogical research material, scrapbooks, bibles, memorabilia, artifacts, photographs, broadsides, paintings, and postage stamps. The correspondence contains one letter from Judge M.H. Dent to his son, Herbert W., on his twenty-first birthday, and one letter from Mary Dent Grinnan commenting on M.H. Dent. The newspaper clippings are a tribute to Judge Dent by Judge Henry Brannon, 1909, and an article on the death of Carrie Dent Armstrong, daughter of Judge Dent. The pictures are of Judge Dent, his wife and children; Robert A. Armstrong; Marmaduke Dent, and Will R.D. Dent.

Tarowsky, Mary Judith Young

Collection includes mostly West Virginia University ephemera, publications, photographs, and negatives, collected by the Young family. Much of the WVU ephemera was likely collected by Guy Bell Young (1874-1962) during his time at the university. Also includes photographs and negatives produced by his son, Guy Bayard Young (1908-1999). Many of these images are from 1936-1937 and pertain to WVU; subjects include Esther Benford (the first woman to receive a civil engineering degree from WVU, and about whom Bayard Young wrote a news article), WVU football games (especially WVU vs. University of Pittsburgh), WVU's Corps of Cadets and their band, and various other student activities. Also includes a few photos of Jackson's Mill, and images of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Jennings Randolph speaking from the back of a train.

Neely, Matthew Mansfield, 1874-1958

Papers of Matthew Neely, a politician who had a long career as senator, congressman, governor, and Democratic political boss. Collection includes speeches, business and personal correspondence, pamphlets, legal papers, photographs, and copies of the Congressional Record. There are also newspaper clipping scrapbooks covering the years 1928-1954 (on five reels of microfilm). Neely had a long career, including law student at West Virginia University, Marion County lawyer, mayor of Fairmont, United States Congressman (1913-1921, 1945-1947), United States Senator (1923-1929, 1931-1941, 1949-1958), and Governor of West Virginia (1941-1945).

Photocopy facsimile of scrapbook assembled by Mildred Arnett-Reed (11' x 16'; 95 pages). Includes photographs, letters from her sister and friends, newspaper clippings, programs, and ephemera documenting Reed's activities in the Morgantown, West Virginia area during her high school years (1924-27). There are also clippings and letters regarding her wedding in 1931, and greeting cards for her 25th wedding anniversary. Photographs include candid and portrait shots of Mildred's family (William E. Arnett, Sr. family) and friends. Newspaper clippings report Mildred Arnett's marriage to Rufus Reed, birth of her daughter Ann, and local events and entertainment in the Morgantown area. Programs document musical, theatrical, and athletic events in Morgantown, including silent movies at the Strand Theater, and events of Morgantown High School and the Metropolitan Theatre, among others. Many of these programs include numerous advertisements for Morgantown businesses. There is also a program for the dedication of new facilities for Morgantown High School (1927). Ephemera includes name cards, dance cards, greeting cards, cartoons, school certificates, gift tags, tickets, and Alpha Xi Delta Sorority invitations and dance programs, among others.

Subjects include book publishing, newspaper and magazine articles, correspondence with legislators and congressmen, personal correspondence, former students, and the Democratic Convention delegate selection in 1928. Also included are materials on Chitwood's books JOHN TYLER: CHAMPION OF THE OLD SOUTH, THE UNITED STATES: A SHORT HISTORY, and RICHARD HENRY LEE: STATESMAN OF THE REVOLUTION.

Conventions and meetings include the WV Delegates to Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Convention, the 13th Annual Meeting of the WV Dairymen's Association, the Democratic National Convention, the WV State Federation of Labor, the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), the United Steelworkers of America, United Mine Workers of America (UMWA), and more. Businesses include the Morgan Shirt Company, the Greenbrier Ore Company, the Libbey-Owens Sheet Glass Company, and more. These photographs include both original and facsimile materials that are either separated from other collections, or are not associated with any collection.
