Description:

The Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library administers over 13 million manuscripts, 3.6 million items in the University archives, and 325,000 rare books, as well as approximately 5,000 maps, over 4,000 broadsides; more than 250,000 photographs and small prints; over 8,000 reels of microfilm; and substantial holdings of audio recordings, motion picture films, and ephemera.

The major emphasis of the Department’s collections are American history and literature, with additional substantive collections in Virginiana, British literature, African-American history, book arts, the history of sporting and World War I, among others. In addition, the library serves as the University Archives, holding records of historic significance to UVA.

World War II photographs and postcards, 1932/1945 1.0 Cubic Feet 21 envelopes of small photographs and postcards

The collection of photographs and postcards consists of 300 items, one document box, twenty one envelopes, and one cubic foot of chiefly World War II era photographs, both amateur and professional. Approximately one half of the photographs are unidentified. The photographs that are identified are mostly related to the 3rd Platoon, Company C, 256th Engineer Combat Battalion. Members of the platoon who are identified on photographs are: (1st Squad) Leonard Brophy, William A. Fretz, Walter M. Tierney, Sr., James R. Ussery, George J. Weiland, and, (Headquarters) Charles S. Kapanski.

Writings and printed, 1904/1961 0.44 Cubic Feet 11 folders in legal document box. Box 5-6

Autobiographical and fictional stories, notes, poems, and drafts of speeches by Celestia Essie Wade Butler Smith from 1904 to 1961. Included is a printed copy of a book, "Roses in December" by Frances Keyes Parkinson and "Forty Years with the Virginia Division United Daughters of the Confederacy" by Essie Smith. There are also many printed programs and playbills from concerts and plays that Mrs. Smith attended on the East Coast. Of interest is an original program from the first release of "Gone With The Wind" in 1939.
