African American Hugh Carr family, River View Farm, and the Papers of the Ivy Creek Foundation, 1916/1988 0.5 Cubic Feet

The papers contain correspondence, legal documents (copies), clippings, articles, research material, maps, and photographs concerning the Ivy Creek Natural Area and its history as the River View Farm owned by the Carr family (African Americans in late nineteenth century), including the original purchase by the Nature Conservancy, the formation of the Ivy Creek Foundation, and its administration of the property.

Cuthbert, John A.
Twenty-four tintypes and six paper photographic prints featuring formal portraits of mostly African Americans. Includes two tintypes and three prints of Caucasian women. All subjects are unidentified except for Mrs. Null and her daughter Hilda on a print dated October 1953. On evidence of the clothing, the tintypes appear to date from the 1880s. This collection was found in Jefferson County, West Virginia.

Papers of author Agnes Smith of Harrison and Marion Counties, West Virginia. The collection includes manuscripts of writings such as essays and stories, personal and professional correspondence, photographs, diaries (1969-1973), her diploma from Fairmont State Teachers College (1932), speeches (1959-1963), and publications. Publications include published copies of essays and articles as well as Smith's books: the award-winning Edge of the Forest (1959) and The Bluegreen Tree (1977), both children's books, and Speaking as a Writer (1978), a collection of essays. This collection is minimally processed.

This collection consists of files compiled in preparing the history of the Cooperative Extension Service entitled College of the Fields: Highlights of the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service, 1914-1980. Included in the collection are: lists of county agents (1914-80); correspondence, articles, speeches and other items from the files of Ella Agnew, first home demonstration agent in the U.S.; information on Seaman Knapp, T.O. Sandy, Maude Wallace, and other pioneers of extension work; information on Negro extension work, 4-H, Black Extension Homemakers Club, Virginia Extension Homemakers Council, and home demonstration work; typed manuscripts of articles and speeches by John R. Hutcheson; photographs of home demonstration work and the people involved; publications consulted for the history; and a rough draft of the history with margin notes and editing.

The A. J. Davis Family Collection includes journals; scrapbooks; professional and biographical information; photographs, sketches, and ephemera; and a town history. The journals (1874-1927) contain memoirs, particularly of Davis' army experiences, as well as some writing exercises, poetry, stories, and religious observations. Scrapbooks compiled by A. J. Davis include newspaper clippings, personal reflections, and a stamp collection. The professional and biographical information includes service records from Davis' time in the army, genealogy information compiled by other family members, and last wills and testaments. The collection also includes a 19-page history of Woods Hole, Massachusetts, authored by Davis, as well as a draft of the Book of A. J. Davis and other manuscripts. The collection also contain pictures of Davis and his wife.
