Anson Du Puy Van Buren letters 0.01 Linear Feet 1 legal size folder

The collection contains two letters: one letter from Anson Du Puy Van Buren to Miss Ada D. Clark, dated August 26, 1863 and another letter from the National Society of Autograph Collectors to Mr. Forest Sweet, dated March 20, 1948. The earlier letter includes a description of Sojourner Truth by Van Buren and references Nathaniel Hawthorne. The second letter documents the provenance of this earlier letter. The collection also contains one newspaper clipping from The Battle Creek Enquirer regarding Sojourner Truth, dated September 24, 1997.

Papers of Asa Philip Randolph, a prominent civil rights and labor leader, who founded and edited The Messenger, an influential black radical labor newspaper of the 1920s and who organized and presided over the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the only independent, viable black trade union in the American labor movement. Much of the correspondence deals with raising subscriptions for The Messenger, gaining an International Charter as an independent affiliate to the American Federation of Labor and the early organizing strike actions against the Pullman Company. This correspondence emphasizes the difficulties of convincing black workers of the feasibility of an independent fledgling black trade union; the necessity of organizing black workers for the benefit of the whole labor movement; and the challenge of maintaining jurisdictional independence from competing trade unions with predominantly white membership, such as the Hotel Workers union. These letters also reflect Randolph's desire to attain full civil rights for blacks.

Appomattox Manor Music Collection 10.10 Linear Feet

The collection contains bound volumes and sheet music of the 19th century and early to mid 20th century. Appomattox Manor, near Hopewell, Virginia, has belonged to the Eppes family since 1635, when Captain Francis Eppes was granted a patent to the land. The Manor served as the headquarters of General Ulysses S. Grant during the Civil War. The home was restored and is open to the public. The collection contains both popular and classical music. Boxes 1 - 18 are bound volumes and sheet music. Box 19 is miscellaneous material including: children's books; poetry books; original index cards for Manor Music Hall library.

The collection contains letters and programs, writings and other papers documenting Aquilla Matthews, an African-American woman originally from Danville, Virginia who was the director of the USO African American Women's group, The Sun and Sand Caravan during World War II. The collection includes: photographs of several members of the group notes with description of different areas served and several letters documenting Matthews personal and professional life.

Arbogast family
Four photographic prints (three mounted; ca. 1890-1910) of group portraits of the Arbogast family as musicians (string and wind), and sheet music (1950) of three sacred songs (hymns) composed by Rev. P.W. Arbogast of Enterprise, West Virginia (WV) with others. Most of the subjects in the photos are identified by annotations on their backs. There are also two photocopied pages of Arbogast biographies from a reference book (source unattributed).
