Correspondence, photos, postcards and memorabilia of a school teacher of White Days Creek and of his wife, Mary Corrothers Zinn. Most of the collection consists of correspondence and photos of Zinn's career in the U. S. Army during World War I. Zinn worked as a math school teacher and as a census taker in the Fetterman District of Taylor County. He spent the war in training at Camp Knox, West Point, KY in Battery E., 70th. Field Artillery Brigade, and he discusses in the letters the daily activities of his unit. There are also photos in uniform and copies of the military records of Earl Zinn and of his grandfather, Sailor Michael Zinn. Sailor Zinn was a member of the 14th. WV Inf. during the Civil War. He was captured and died in the infamous Confederate prison camp in Georgia of Andersonville. There is also a 19th century photo album and loose pictures of the Steele, Arnett & Sanders families of Monongalia County who are related to Mrs. Earl R. Zinn.

A scrapbook compiled by E.L. Mathers and Max Mathers, dealing with Morgantown and Monongalia County. There are photographs and newspaper clippings concerning civic, military, and social organizations; taverns and hotels; churches and schools; marriages and deaths; historic houses, early buildings, business places, and river navigation; and biographical sketches.

Papers of the Fairfax and Warman families of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, Morgantown, and Kingwood. There are letters (1811-1874) to Elizabeth Fairfax from family members and friends; papers (1840-1851) of William Warman; papers on the settlement of the John Fairfax estate; a manuscript census book of Preston County for 1830; and an account book (1857-1872) of F.B.F. Fairfax. A few advertising circulars, 1866-1931, are included, as well as clippings on Morgantown and Monongalia County, 1868-1933.

A certified abstract to the Felix Snider property of Grant district, Monongalia County, indicating leases of mineral rights, describing location of property and payment of taxes. There is a history of this acreage from when it was patented (1809) by the Commonwealth of Virginia to the heirs of George Snider to the settlement (1930) of the Felix Snider Estate. Included in the abstract are legal actions among the heirs, warranty deeds, plats, and wills. Part of this tract is still owned by the Snider family who have the original 1809 land patent.

Correspondence, speeches, manuscripts, research notes, and other papers of a historian who served on the faculty of West Virginia University from 1932 to 1965 and as chairman of the history department from 1946 to 1962. Included are: his official as well as personal correspondence; notes for speeches; research notes, rough drafts and proofs for his published works on William L. Wilson and Johnson Newlon Camden; exams, outlines, and notes for classes he taught; material relating to the University Senate and committees on which he served; a scrapbook covering Monongalia County and other subjects (1850-1897); and papers relating to West Virginia University. Included is a manuscript history of West Virginia University which Summers worked on during his retirement and which William T. Doherty, Jr. finished and published in 1982 as WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY: SYMBOL OF UNITY IN A SECTIONALIZED STATE. There is also desk plaque given to Summers when he served on the West Virginia Centennial Commission; the plaque is fashioned of wood from the first capitol in Wheeling.

Papers of Franklin Marion Brand, lawyer and politician of Monongalia County, West Virginia. Includes mostly correspondence related to legal and political matters (some personal) in Monongalia County and the state of West Virginia (inclusive dates: 1917-1944; bulk dates: 1935-1943). Diverse in content, this correspondence includes material regarding activities of city government (Morgantown), local schools and churches, bar associations, the Republican State Committee, state government, and other organizations. A series of correspondence dating from 1943, labeled "legislative" by Brand, includes a wide range of material reflecting his activities as a delegate from Monongalia County. There is also an extensive series of political handbills and pamphlets, many of which advocate Republican opposition to the New Deal policies of President Franklin Roosevelt. Coal miner of Monongalia County, West Virginia. The collection includes pay envelopes and records from the Rosedale Coal Co., Connellsville By-Product Coal Corp. and Kelley's Creek Colliery Co. There also are certificates of appointment for a second-class mine foreman and a check weighman, an official tally sheet for a UMWA election, bylaws of the Mountaineer Craftsmen's Cooperative Association, a grievance blank, production statistics (1920-1921) for the Rosedale Coal Co.'s No.2 mine, and class notes and course material (1928) from a West Virginia University Mining Extension Course.

Papers of the family of Edgar W. Garlow and his wife Maryland Steele Garlow, a Monongalia County farm family. They consist of wills, death notices, and genealogical data. The records indicate in detail the wealth of their holdings.
