Virginia Folklore Society records (1913-1967; 22.7 cubic feet) consist chiefly of songs collected by the society's fieldworkers in the 1930s under the direction of society archivist Arthur Kyle Davis. Sheet music, folklore, newsletters and photographs are also included, as are recordings of many of the songs.

This collection was organized by Richard J. DeMartino during his tenure as one of the "historian advisors" to the International Military Tribunal for the Far East between 1946-1948.

This collection, consisting of ca. 760 items, (5 Hollinger boxes, 22-1/2 linear shelf inches), includes the papers of the Woods Familyof Albemarle County, Virginia, from 1847 to 1926. Correspondence comprises the major part of the collection and deals with a variety of subjects. The correspondence between Micajah Woodsand his parents during the Civil War includes detailed descriptions of the campaigns and battles in which he fought, among them the battles of Port Republic, Second Manassas, Crampton's Gap, Sharpsburg, New Market, Second Cold Harbor, Lynchburg, Fisher's Hill, and Monocacy. The men under whom he served included "Stonewall" Jackson, J. E. B. Stuart, and John Floyd. A portion of the post-Civil War correspondence regards Civil War Veterans' Reunions and recollections of battles and campaigns.

The Charles Beseler Lantern Slide Company salesman sample catalogs (1890s-1920; 1.2 cubic feet) document a portion of the titular company's product line at the turn of the 20th century. The collection consists of ten albums--about 950 lantern slide prints in total--on a variety of topics. Many photographs are of historical and Christian figures, while others range from architecture and engineering diagrams to landscapes and artwork.

These papers fill 455 special four-inch Hollinger storage boxes (ca. 150 linear feet) and span the years 1895-1937. There are three major series: Edward L. Stone's papers re his personal life and diversified business, professional, and civic concerns; papers concerned with his principal business, the Stone Printing and Manufacturing Company of Roanoke, Virginia; and those papers concerned with the Borderland Coal Company of West Virginia and Kentucky of which Stone was the principal officer for many years. Because these series basically are composed of Stone's personal papers, and because there are interrelationships between material in one series and that in another, the series have been maintained in the boxes in the order in which they were found.

This collection consists of ca. 3,000 items, (13 Hollingers and 15 oversize bound volumes), ca. 9 linear shelf feet), ca. 1907-1949, chiefly the genealogical correspondence and research of William D. Ligon, Jr.concerning the Ligon family. The collection contains correspondence, newsclippings, photographs, post cards, photostats, forms, genealogical charts, book reviews, Christmas card albums, and printed material, much of it mounted in bound volumes and scrapbooks. Also present is the typescript and illustrations for the book The Ligon Family and Connections,the product of all of the research and genealogical inquiries conducted by Ligon through his correspondence.

This collection contains a black and white photograph of Black army musicians of the 165 Depot Brigade, Camp Travis, Texas. A typed caption pasted on the back of the photo reads, "#263 Negro Band, Frist [sic] Group, 165 Depot Brigade, Camp Travis, Texas. Taken just outside Army Y.M.C.A. Building No. 1, devoted exclusively to negro troops. (Negro Secretaries in charge.)" Publicity Bureau National War Work Council, Y.M.C.A. Northeastern Dept. 352 Little Bldg. Boston, Mass is stamped in ink on the back. The picture depicts twenty-one men seated and two standing in uniform outside the Y.M.C.A building. The men hold their instruments, which include trumpets, French horns, saxophones, clarinets, trombones, tuba, and drums. The role of Depot Brigades was to receive and organize recruits, provide them with uniforms, equipment, and initial military training, and then send them to France to fight on the front lines. The depot brigades also received soldiers returning home at the war's end and completed their outprocessing and discharges.

The papers of Clarence B. Pearce consist primarily of letters written by Pearce to his mother as well as photographs of Pearce and the University of Virginia grounds while Pearce was a law student (1917 - 1921). His college activities included participation in the debating society and service on the editorial board of Virgina Law Review.

This collection consists of 17 boxes. The main characteristics of this collection are extensive correspondence, organizational papers including Board of Directors and various committee minutes and financial reports. Another strong characteristic of this collection are papers and photographs representing the social events within the Alumni Association and those sponsored by the Alumni Association involving the School of Nursing. Awards and Scholarships sponsored and presented by the Alumni Association are also represented in this collection.
