Davis, Albert John, 1854-1935
The A. J. Davis Family Collection includes journals; scrapbooks; professional and biographical information; photographs, sketches, and ephemera; and a town history. The journals (1874-1927) contain memoirs, particularly of Davis' army experiences, as well as some writing exercises, poetry, stories, and religious observations. Scrapbooks compiled by A. J. Davis include newspaper clippings, personal reflections, and a stamp collection. The professional and biographical information includes service records from Davis' time in the army, genealogy information compiled by other family members, and last wills and testaments. The collection also includes a 19-page history of Woods Hole, Massachusetts, authored by Davis, as well as a draft of the Book of A. J. Davis and other manuscripts. The collection also contain pictures of Davis and his wife.

Davis, William Couch

This a a collection of diaries of William Couch Davis, Jr., and his wife, Mary Anderson Davis, including accounts of William's jobs in France (1917-19), Cuba, Savannah, and Norfolk. They include many details about the Davis family of West Point, Virginia. One of Mary's diaries covers their first married year (1924-25) in Cuba and others cover their trips (1935-1959) out west in Canada and to Central America and Europe.

Zinn, Earl Ray
Correspondence, photos, postcards and memorabilia of a school teacher of White Days Creek and of his wife, Mary Corrothers Zinn. Most of the collection consists of correspondence and photos of Zinn's career in the U. S. Army during World War I. Zinn worked as a math school teacher and as a census taker in the Fetterman District of Taylor County. He spent the war in training at Camp Knox, West Point, KY in Battery E., 70th. Field Artillery Brigade, and he discusses in the letters the daily activities of his unit. There are also photos in uniform and copies of the military records of Earl Zinn and of his grandfather, Sailor Michael Zinn. Sailor Zinn was a member of the 14th. WV Inf. during the Civil War. He was captured and died in the infamous Confederate prison camp in Georgia of Andersonville. There is also a 19th century photo album and loose pictures of the Steele, Arnett & Sanders families of Monongalia County who are related to Mrs. Earl R. Zinn.

Correspondence, farm records, legal and financial records, speeches, medical files, photographs, and newspaper clippings of Governor (1913-17) and United States Senator (1929-35) Henry D. Hatfield, who was also chief surgeon and founder of the Huntington Memorial Hospital.

This collection contains primary and secondary resources pertaining to Robert E. Lee and the Lee family. Included are correspondences from, to, and about Lee and various family members; memorabilia, pamphlets, photographs, reminiscences, miscellaneous personal papers, family history and genealogy. The collection includes materials acquired from the Lee family and items donated to and purchased and compiled by W&L University since Lee's tenure as president of Washington College from 1865 - 1870. Adminstrative papers, such as President's Reports, etc..., from Robert E. Lee's presidency of the school may be found within the W&L University Archives. The Thomas Griest World War I collection contains correspondence, photographs, military field orders, and ephemera created and collected by American soldier Thomas Griest primarily during and immediately after his time serving with the 406th Telegraph Battalion during World War I, 1917-1919.

William Emory Paul World War I Papers, 1917/1919 0.8 Linear Feet Summary: 10 in. (2 document cases, 5 in. each)

The letters, diary, and service related documents of William Emory Paul, a Captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corps, who served with the 327th Inf. Reg., 82nd Div. A.E.F. in France during World War I. Most of the documents are supply forms, regulations, and his service records and identification papers. The diary records his time spent at the front working in medical aide stations during the Meuse-Argonne campaign, for which he received promotion to Major. The letters are to his parents or to his wife and despite censorship rules, depict with much detail life in training at Camp Gordon, Atlanta, GA, conditions in war time France, life at the battle front and the movements of his unit and his travels on leave to Paris, Marseilles and Nice.

World War I Postcard, 1917/1918 0.01 Linear Feet

One postcard depicting an American soldier towing a pretzel, a beer stein, sausages, and a dachshund. The caption says "I'll bring you back some souvenirs." The postcard was not sent but does bear the name "Harry Lydie" in pencil on the reverse.
