This series contains the correspondence between Catlett family members. The bulk of correspondence is addressed to the matriarch, Fannie Bolling Gay Catlett (under the name Mrs. R.H. Catlett), with most being sent by Elizabeth Gay Catlett (who signed these letters as "Dib"). Other family members gave the nickname "Baby" to Fanny Gay and a slew of other illegible nicknames to Amy Pendleton. The correspondence itself covers family and community news: Fannie Catlett would update her children about the goings-on of Staunton, Elizabeth would write her family about school experiences at Edgeworth College in Baltimore, Maryland, and Amy Pendleton wrote about her travels in Europe. Some items of potential interest include Elizabeth Catlett's monthly report cards or letters to Amy Catlett from a gentleman admirer.

Series 1: Correspondence, 1891-1939, is comprised primarily of postcards, Christmas cards, and general correspondence sent to and between Heatwole family members. The correspondence is arranged primarily by recipient, but in cases where the recipient is unknown (e.g. non-specific salutations and greetings or lack of return address), the correspondence is filed by author.

Includes letters to General Edward W. Nichols and Greenlee Letcher concerning Virginia Mourning Her Dead (New Market Monument) and the Stonewall Jackson statue at VMI. Also includes postcards sent primarily to family members, including Henry C. Ezekiel and Rebecca Ezekiel.

Series 1: Correspondence, 1830-2011, is comprised of more than 300 individual letters. The majority of the earlier ones involve Sarah "Sallie" Scott Bassett and/or her husband R.H. Bassett. Together their combined correspondence comprises eight folders and spans the years 1850-1913.

Celestia Essie Wade Butler Smith personal and business correspondence about her work with the United Daughters of the Confederacy, honoring Southern Confederates, particularly Robert E. Lee, invitations from Governor and Mrs. Westmoreland Davis, and letters with other writers and publishers about her manuscripts and poems. Correspondents include Frances Parkinson Keyes, Sophie Carter Richardson, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Richard Wightman. There are also letters from her daughter Mary Cabell Smith who was working in Europe for General Motors as a stenographer and model in Europe in the 1920's. There is a miscellaneous account of a friend's (Frank Harrold, Jr.) meeting with the Duke of Windsor when he was a young man at a party in America.

This series includes both professional and personal correspondence received; carbon copies of correspondence sent; and collected research materials in addition to letters. The correspondence is with colleagues from across the United States and abroad; citizens with inquiries regarding plants, such as roots in a basement; students regarding grades, course work, and recommendations; as well as family and friends including greeting cards. Some correspondence is typed, some handwritten, some on mimeographed pages, and some on postcards and slips of paper. Subjects include discussions of publications and orders for publications such as The Flora of West Virginia, Wild Flowers of West Virginia, and Spring Wild Flowers; content and business for the journal Castenea; discussions and notifications of botanical species' identification and request for specimens; WVU academic matters and WVU Department of Biology business; and family and other personal matters including letters and flyers regarding the Disciples of Christ Church and the First Christian Church in Morgantown where Dr. Core was a member. Of significance are letters from botanists P. D. (Perry Daniel) Strausbaugh, 1886-1965, and H. A. (Harry Ardell) Allard, 1880-1963. An envelope of addresses on slips of paper, torn from envelopes, and business cards is included in this series.
