Records of the Sigma Nu Home Association documenting the acquisition of properties for the Sigma Nu fraternity at West Virginia University (WVU). Includes by-laws of the organization, contracts, and other material. Some of the records regard properties in the Fifth Ward district of Morgantown, West Virginia, in the vicinity of Union and Vernon Avenues, and also downtown properties on Spruce and Walnut Streets. This collection also includes publications of the Hill and Dale Private Press and Type Foundry of Terra Alta, West Virginia (1975-1994); the first published catalog of West Virginia books (1963); seed and plant catalogs (1934-1948); two Victorian scrapbooks (ca. 1885-1900); as well as various books, publications, and ephemera. This material was acquired in the Morgantown, West Virginia area.

Dille, Thomas Ray

Papers of a Morgantown attorney, genealogist, and antiquarian. There are several series of office files relating to Dille's law practice, and extensive correspondence regarding his historical and genealogical studies. Families for which there are genealogical compilations include Dille, Ray, Stewart, McFarland, Tennant, David Evans, and John Evans. Monongalia County birth and death records; cemetery readings; copies of wills and indexes of will books; names in real estate and appraisement books; Monongalia Academy and Woodburn Female Seminary ledgers, 1858; correspondence; legal papers; newspaper clippings; family papers; and an account book of J.R. Moore, 1837. Collection also contains papers on the West Virginia Historical Society, Morgantown and Wheeling Railroad, Sons of the Revolution and the Evansdale Corporation. Also includes some personal correspondence received by Dille, like mailed promotional/advertising booklets and copies of "The Mohawk Magazine."

Zinn, Thomas E.
Pictures and genealogical information on the Zinn and allied families, namely the Shafers, from France and Germany who eventually settled in West Virginia, particularly the line of George Zinn, a Revolutionary War veteran of Preston County. There are also two postcards of Williamstown, Wood County, West Virginia, and 108 photos of Morgantown, West Virginia, especially of the Farmers and Merchants Bank while C. Glenn Zinn was an executive, ca. 1742-1974. Addenda to the collection include: 1) Sixty-one glass lantern slides of a WWI flight squadron's activities, ca. 1917-1918; 2) postcards and travel memorabilia, ca. 1940s; 3) artifacts and illustrations featuring General Lee and "Stonewall" Jackson of the Confederacy during the Civil War, 1994-2002; 4) collectible liberty bell bank issued by the Second National Bank of Morgantown, undated (3 3/4 in. wide, 4 in. tall); 5) State of West Virginia Certificate for Edward W. Dering appointing him a member of the West Virginia Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors, 1969; and 6) aerial view (11 in. x 16 in.) of Cheat Lake in the vicinity of the "old" bridge before the Interstate 68 bridge was built. Material covers the years 1742-2005.

Pietro, Thoney, 1877-1972
Personal letters, business correspondence, account and time books, and Sons of Italy papers of Thoney Pietro, a member of the Morgantown contracting company of Pietro Brothers. An addendum (2004 January) includes mostly business papers of the Pietro Company, as well as some family papers and historical documentation of Morgantown, WV. Notable are the map and blue print of the Pietro Castle grounds (later the Good Counsel Friary). Another addendum (2013 January) includes an accounting ledger, financial documents, legal papers (some involving a dispute with a Franciscan monastery, circa 1950), and blueprints (1911-1917, 1941-1954). Papers of the managing editor of the Parkersburg DAILY STATE JOURNAL, 1889-1895, editor of the WEST VIRGINIA SCHOOL JOURNAL, and member of the English faculty of West Virginia University, 1895-1925. The collection includes manuscripts of Barbe's published poetry and unpublished short stories, correspondence, notes, speeches, class lectures, illustrations for short stories drawn by John Rettig, a scrapbook of clippings of reviews and correspondence relating to Barbe's book, GOING TO COLLEGE, and memorabilia. The correspondence includes letters, in some cases accompanied by holograph verse, from Winston Churchill, Richard Harding Davis, Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, Hamlin Garland, R.W. Gilder, Edward E. Hale, William H. Hayne, Thomas Wentworth Higginson, Julia Ward Howe, William Dean Howells, Rupert Hughes, Stephen Leacock, Nicholas Vachel Lindsay, Amy Lowell, Brander Matthews, Margaret Prescott Montague, Bliss Perry, Melville D. Post, Edwin Arlington Robinson, Booth Tarkington, Charles Dudley Warner, Barrett Wendell, William Allen White, W.L. Wilson, and Owen Wister. There is also a volume of mounted holograph letters, 1884-1895, from the following American authors, a few of whom are also included in the general collection: Edward W. Bok, George W. Cable, Kate Chopin, Danske Dandridge, Oliver W. Holmes, Clifford Lanier, Sidney Lanier, Thomas Nelson Page, Margaret J. Preston, James Whitcomb Riley, and John G. Whittier. Most letters are brief and many are simple acknowledgements.

Lewis family
Papers of Walter Dix Lewis (1891-1958), a carpenter and facilities worker, and Osie Grose Lewis (1891-1979), his wife, of Morgantown, West Virginia. The collection is divided into six series: Series 1. Letters, 1908, 1923, 1934-1979 and undated; Series 2. Diaries, 1927-1957; Series 3. Cards, 1940, 1951-1979 and undated; Series 4. Financial and Legal Materials, 1927-1978; Series 5. Family Material, 1960-1974 and undated; and Series 6. Printed Material, 1931-1977 and undated. Collection also contains an oversize 1937 map of the buildings at West Virginia University and the school's underground telephone conduits.
