Collections

This collection contains the papers, dated 1859-1934, but mainly 1862-1864, of Augustus C. Golding (also spelled as Goldin and , Golden). It includes letters, a letterbook, diaries, documents, pension papers, printed materials, and photographs. All items relate to Golding's service in the Union Army, 1861-1864, in Northern Virginia, on the Virginia peninsula, and in Maryland. Golding's letters to family and friends describe troop movements, battles, camp conditions, his health, a hospital, and the weather. Golding describes his participation in the following battles or their aftermath: Gaines Mill, Malvern Hill, Mechanicsville, 2nd Bull Run or Manassas, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. He occasionally presents his views on war, politics, and the destruction of Virginia's cities and countryside. He also gives financial and practical advice. The collection contains genealogical data on Golding's immediate family.

Baby book, ca. 1899-1910, kept for Austin Brockenbrough, Jr. and Anne Gordon Brockenbrough. The book contains photographs, lists of presents, locks of hair, newspaper clippings, and a list of wedding presents.

Avent family papers, 1905-1982, 0.09 cubic feet, was purchased with the Harris family papers and Special Collections separated them. The collection contains photographs, ledgers for real estate and fire insurance, and invitations and programs for various activities including Roanoke City High School graduation program, The Domino Club, Elks Club dance card, Virginia Coal Operators Association Banquet, and the Phythian Sisters of Virginia.

Records of a church near Morgantown, including minutes, 1843-1855; register of members, baptisms, deaths, and marriages, 1919-1929; organization of the Young People's Meeting, 1935-1943; the Sunday school, 1935; and organization of the Christian Endeavor Society, 1934; minutes of the Easton-Avery Community Building, 1939-1946; minutes of the Community Center Board of Directors; and Bible Class records, 1908-1926.

This collection in comprised principally business and family correspondence and general papers of the Baer family of the Panther Gap vicinity of Rockbridge County, Va. with a concentration of papers relative to the family's land holdings such as maps, indentures, and wills. Other highlights are a group of twenty-one manuscript weaving drafts for making household textiles, a family Bible in German(l744), local militia fines, genealogical materials, some relating to the Decker and Hite (Heyt) families, and two farming account books of Joseph Baer, 1853-1859.

Collection includes papers, 1656-1848, concerning Essex County, Va. including land records and wills, many of which relate to the Rowzee family. Many of the records date from the seventeenth century.
