This collection depicts the family lives of three prominent New England families, the Butler, Collins, and Terry families from 1808 to 1920 consisting of 8.5 cubic feet, (17 document boxes). Their correspondence, genealogy, photographs, and journals compile a historical collection, vast in size and informative of American life in the nineteenth century.

The William and Eula Richardson Phelps letters (1895-1940; 2 cubic feet) relates the courtship and early marriage of William and Eula Richardson and their life with family members. William was a tobacco salesman for R. H. Fishburne and Company in Roanoke, Virginia and because he travelled across the mid-west for his living, there are frequent letters between the couple, that describe their life at the turn of the century. There are also letters from Eula's family about her mother being unwell, and the medical attention that was provided during this time. A hypnotist by the name of Price is also mentioned. In addition to family correspondence there is a handwritten will from Eula Phelps; a marriage certificate,a wedding "Memories" booklet,a teacher certificate,report cards for her sister Leah Richardson, a Workman's Time book,and photographs of William Stine Phelps, and Eula's father, David P. Phelps.

This collection primarily contains Civil War-era letters from William Hogan to his wife, Lucinda, from 1862 to 1864. In addition to the letters, there is a single, undated, photograph of three family members, Lucinda James and Mollie Hogan. Letters between William and Lucinda discuss Confederate camp life, operations on the Hogan family's farm in McDowell County, North Carolina, William's participation in the Battles of Antietam and Fredericksburg, observations of Virginia and North Carolina, and the couple's children. Several letters were written from Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, where William recovered after being injured in battle. Most of the letters in the collection are addressed to Lucinda from William, often prefaced with "Dear Wife" and sometimes "Dear Wife and children." Letters from William are written in multiple hands, suggesting he often dictated his letters to other soldiers in camp. Letters from Lucinda are prefaced with "Dear Husband" and are placed marked with McDowell County. William's letters often express his discontentment with the war, his hatred of "the yankes," and his longing to be back home with his family in McDowell.

Series III of the William Faulkner Collection contains the personal papers, files, belongings, and related realia of William Faulkner. Materials in the collection range in date from 1824 to 2003 and are divided into eight subseries: William Faulkner's working papers related to his literary works, drawings made by Faulkner, his childhood ephemera and student records, military and flight records, family papers, honors and awards, belongings and related realia, and reminiscences or accounts of William Faulkner.

The practice of Long and Sadler, as documented in this collection, was characteristic of legal work in a small town in the early twentieth century. The cases are virtually all civil, primarily trusts and estates, real estate, insurance, torts, and divorce. From the earliest period of Long's practice, there are very few documents: one case file, two bound abstracts of title, and a ledger book dating from the early 1900s. After 1914, Long's time was apparently taken up primarily by his duties as Commissioner of Accounts, although he also served as attorney in trust and estate cases, and handled some divorces. The bulk of the cases documented here, therefore, are Sadler's.

William Gwynn Coe diary transcript [1935?]; 1864-1865, and other papers, 0.03 cubic feet, about the activities of a pastor and his family in 1864 in Onancock, on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Also included is a document titled "From An Authentic History of Onancock Methodist Episcopal Church, South" by J. Shenton Lodge, a map of Onancock County, and Coe's pastoral report to the convention conference on February 27, 1865.
