Description:

The Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library administers over 13 million manuscripts, 3.6 million items in the University archives, and 325,000 rare books, as well as approximately 5,000 maps, over 4,000 broadsides; more than 250,000 photographs and small prints; over 8,000 reels of microfilm; and substantial holdings of audio recordings, motion picture films, and ephemera.

The major emphasis of the Department’s collections are American history and literature, with additional substantive collections in Virginiana, British literature, African-American history, book arts, the history of sporting and World War I, among others. In addition, the library serves as the University Archives, holding records of historic significance to UVA.

Series 3: Government Military Records, 1855/1913

Series 3: Government Military Records (1855-1913; approx. 9 cubic feet) is comprised of records produced in the United States of America (USA) and the Confederate States of America (CSA) during and related to the administration of the United States Civil War (1861–1865), including a small number of postwar records. Materials include orders, reports, muster rolls, requisitions, correspondence, broadsides, and financial transactions produced by commanding officers acting in their official capacity as leaders of military organizations (e.g., Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, Daniel Ruggles, James Longstreet, and Napoleon Jackson Tecumseh Dana). It also includes records created by military units (e.g., companies, battalions, regiments, brigades, and corps) as well bureaucratic military leadership structures of the USA and CSA (e.g., the Quartermaster's Department and the Ordnance Office as well as the various departments, districts, and armies of strategic leadership). Also included are records from leading figures in the executive branches of government in the USA (e.g., President Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of War Edwin Stanton) and CSA (e.g., Jefferson Davis). Exceptions include a few groupings of personal papers, including the personal papers of John W. Hanscom of the 6th New Hampshire Infantry Regiment.

Series II. Henry Rose Carter, 1880/1932, bulk 1883/1932 9 boxes Box 7-15

Series II. Henry Rose Carter consists of materials relating to Henry Rose Carter that Philip Showalter Hench collected while researching the yellow fever experiments. Items in this series date from around 1880 to 1932 with the bulk of the materials dating from 1883 to 1932. The series is particularly rich in materials that document Henry Rose Carter's professional activities in the last eleven years of his life (1914-1925). These materials include, but are not limited to the following:
