Description:

The Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library administers over 13 million manuscripts, 3.6 million items in the University archives, and 325,000 rare books, as well as approximately 5,000 maps, over 4,000 broadsides; more than 250,000 photographs and small prints; over 8,000 reels of microfilm; and substantial holdings of audio recordings, motion picture films, and ephemera.

The major emphasis of the Department’s collections are American history and literature, with additional substantive collections in Virginiana, British literature, African-American history, book arts, the history of sporting and World War I, among others. In addition, the library serves as the University Archives, holding records of historic significance to UVA.

Rose, Redd, and Claiborne family papers, 1771/2009 1.69 Cubic Feet 1 cubic box; 1 elephant folio flat file folder, 1 medium oversize folder

This collection contains correspondence, deeds, estate indentures, account books, receipts notebooks, photographs, carte-de-visite, genealogical research and trees, clippings, a tintype, and ephemera, including wallets, a metal box, and a lock of hair documenting the Rose, Redd, and Claiborne families of Virginia. Names frequently appearing in papers include Eugene M. Redd and his son James Redd. Also included are Ezra Morrison, Mattie Tompkins, Clarence Redd, Jessie Redd McCarthy, Rachel Ayers, Blaine McCarthy Willett, John McCarthy, and the Blain family. The papers document genealogical research and track land purchase and holding, including the Bellevette, a Robert Rose property that has passed down to his descendants, in Nelson County. Also included is correspondence from the turn of the century regarding the Central Virginia Electric Cooperative, a private, not-for-profit cooperative that has provided electricity to customers.

R. Randolph Hicks case briefs, 1895/1915 10 Volumes

This collection contains 10 volumes (numbered I-VII and IX-XI) of briefs for cases in which R. Randolph Hicks participated. Two of the volumes pertain to the Stein, et al v. Morris, et al suit, related the Morris Plan banks. David Stein, a former client of Arthur J. Morris, sued him arguing that he had stolen the idea from him, but the court found against him. (Gunnar Trumbull, Consumer Lending in France and America. Credit and Welfare, Cambridge University Press, 2014).

Rufus Ivory Cole papers, 1900/1966 1.25 Linear Feet

Cole's collection contains correspondence, including several postcards from his grandsons and one with "Mrs. Rufus Cole" printed on it; reprints of journal articles, mainly ones written by Cole; and biographical memoirs and honorary programs related to Sir William Osler, William H. Welch, William Stewart Halstead, Samuel James Meltzer, Harvey Cushing, William George MacCallum, Oswald Theodore Avery, Simon Flexner, Thomas Milton Rivers, Max Broedel, and Allen O. Whipple.

Ruth A. Curtis art notebook, 1906/1909 .03 Cubic Feet 1 folder (letter)

Langdon Manor Books

This collection contains a single notebook of Ruth A. Curtis of Windsor, Connecticut. The notebook documents her studies in art, spanning two different groups of lessons from 1906-1909. There are encouraging notes from her instructor, Marshall T. Fry, and several examples of her art, including woodblock prints and two colorful drawings of flowers. Her notes include motive, arrangement, color, shape, value, intensity, design principles, and lecture notes. Curtis also copied a "Schedule of 10 lessons in design" by Frank Alvah Parsons of the Chase Art School in New York. Immediately following this schedule was a list of materials and their costs for a "Winter 1908-9" group of lessons with "Instructor Marshall Frye."
