Correspondence of businessman and politician Thomas Beall Davis (1828-1911), brother of Henry Gassaway Davis (1823-1916). Most of the letters and telegrams concern the lobbying efforts of individuals and organizations to influence Davis when he filled an unexpired term in the House of Representatives of the U.S. Congress (June 6, 1905-March 3, 1907). There are many requests for appointments, discharges, and pensions. Also lobbying requests for interstate commerce requiring subsidies or regulations for matters of harbors, railways, and temperance. Mentioned are the West Virginia Anti-Saloon League; the West Virginia Board of Agriculture in support of the Grange; and a union of harbor pilots, the American Pilot Association. There is also a letter from I. C. White of the West Virginia Geological Survey protesting a proposed appropriations cut for the United States Geological Survey which would have limited its scope to only mapping public lands in the West. Also included is a biographical sketch of H. G. Davis up to 1909 which lists his charitable and philanthropic works. Also there is a blueprint map of Barbour County Century Coal Field showing watershed and railways, ca. 1900.

Autograph manuscript with signature at the end of a poem entitled "Logan Grazier". English was an opponent of Edgar Allen Poe and wrote in a style imitative of his immediate literary predecessors. This poem is his celebration of the simple, hardworking herdsmen of Logan County. The author hopes that he, the poem and its subject will be long remembered. Also there is a TLS from the author Davis Grubb (dated: 11 September 1954) requesting that he be excused from meeting a deadline on A Dream of Kings. Talks about how writers have a habit of avoiding what they should be doing.

Papers and artifacts of General Thomas M. (Mealey) Harris (1817-1906) who served with the 10th West Virginia Infantry and the Army of West Virginia during the Civil War. He was also a member of the military commission in the trial of the Abraham Lincoln assassination conspirators in 1865. Letters, commissions, reports, a photograph, and newspaper clippings chiefly relate to Harris's military service in the 1860s. Items include military commissions; letters from 1862 about Harris's service in what is now West Virginia; Harris's official reports of the Civil War battles at Winchester and Cedar Creek in 1864 and Hatcher's Run in 1865; letters from 1892 about Harris's book on the Lincoln assassination conspirators; and copies of Harris's 1906 obituary. Box 1 contains two oversize military appointments, remnants of the flag from the 10th West Virginia Infantry, the epaulets and sash from Harris's uniform, and his ring.
