Includes a family history narrative (folder 1), transcript of a journal (folder 1), copies of legal documents (folder 2), and colored copies of photographs and portraits of Sommerville family members and of artifacts associated with the family (folders 3 and 4). Material regarding Robert A. Sommerville includes a transcription of family and personal memoranda he recorded in 1852; the transcript contains an account of the emigration of his father William from Ireland to the American Colonies in the 1770s, and excerpts from a journal kept by William Sommerville in 1794. Material regarding Obed W. Sommerville includes documents regarding his Civil War service, pension records, copies of legal testimony regarding his placement in a mental asylum, and his death certificate. All items in this collection are reproductions.

Records relating to the history of southeastern West Virginia. Most of the items in the collection relate to Greenbrier and/or Monroe County. Includes antebellum (1833-1850; 7 items), Civil War (1861-1863; 4 items), and postbellum (1886-1933; 9 items) materials. Antebellum material includes a land suit, an estate report and schedule, other financial documents, and personal letter. Civil War material includes four letters authored by Confederate soldiers. Two of these letters describe the battle of Carnifex Ferry. Family names Sharitz and Yonce appear in three of the letters. Postbellum material includes pharmacy receipts, personal letters, programs, and a photograph.

Business and legal correspondence of Spencer Dayton including letters describing the state legislature of 1872; college correspondence, biographical sketches, testimonials, and memorials of Alston G. Dayton. Other A. G. Dayton material includes papers and letters dealing with his support of the "Big Navy " program in congress and his tour of the British Naval Yards in 1903. There are several family letters including his last letters to his wife. The rest of the collection contains material on family genealogy and history including papers of Adam See, 1801-1837, a Randolph county lawyer and member of the Virginia Constitutional Convention, typescript volume , "Records of the See family of Virginia," by T. J. J. See (1913). Correspondents include H. G. Davis, David Goff, Charles Ambler and T. J. J. See. A detailed paper guide to this collection can be found in the control folder for A&M 0052.
