Collections

This collection contains two photograph albums created by the Anderson family of the City of Lexington and Rockbridge County, Virginia. The albums house photographs taken during the late 19th century and the very early 20th century of the extended Anderson family. They include photos taken in Rockbridge County and Lexington, Virginia and across the United States during road trips. Several Lexington community members are included in the photographs.

The bulk of the Andrew C. L. Gatewood papers consist of 28 letters (dated 1860-1864) written by Gatewood to his parents and other family members. Early letters describe life at VMI and in Lexington, Virginia, just prior to and during early months of the Civil War. Subsequent letters date from Gatewood's service with the 11th Virginia Cavalry Regiment, Company F (Bath Squadron), including a letter (dated September 1862) written after the Second Battle of Manassas (2nd Bull Run).

Geral Jenny gave from his office some correspondence of Dr. A.D. Hopkins, Professor of Entomology, West Virginia University. In addition to the long list of letters there is a diary and a record book which had been kept by Dr.Hopkins. Hopkins (1857-1948) was vice-director of the West Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station, professor of entomology at West Virginia University, 1890-1902, forest entomologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 1902-1923, and a researcher in bioclimatics with the USDA at Kanawha Farms, Wood County, 1923-1933.

Correspondence, printed bulletins and programs, clippings, and other materials from the files of Andrew D. Hopkins, Head, Department of Entomology, West Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station, relating to the West Virginia Experiment Station, farmers' institutes, and the Blennerhasset Park project of 1935. The correspondence is by, or mentions, John A. Myers, A.D. Hopkins, C.R. Orton, and W. G. Peterkin.

This collection includes artifacts, correspondence, legal records, photographs, and writings primarily related to Davis's publishing contracts. Letters between Davis and his lawyer Frederick Atherton form the bulk of the correspondence. In addition, the collection includes personal papers of Davis' wife, Delphine Markham Davis (1839-1928). Delphine, a graduate of the United States Medical College in New York, married Davis in 1885.

37 letters, mostly during the Civil War era, written by Andrew J. Weeks, of Brooklyn, New York, to his sister, Hannah Weeks of Merrick, Long Island, New York. He was a 1st sergeant of Co. D., 10th Regiment of the New York infantry Volunteers. He wrote from Fort Monroe, Virginia, Gosport Navy Yard, Virginia, Richmond, Virginia, Point Lookout, Maryland, Beaufort, North Carolina and Riker's Island, New York. On March 9, 1861, Weeks states the Merrimac has sunk the Cumberland and the Ericcson arrived in time to save Newport News from falling to the Rebels. He saw much naval activity and writes of the blockade off of Wilmington, North Carolina and describes the military zone around Richmond in February 1863.

Personal and family correspondence; legal and personal buisness papers; roll of Chapman's Battery and list of names of Monroe Guards who served in Civil war; one copy of booklet, PRISON LIFE OF ONE OF THE IMMORTAL SIX HUNDRED (1910) by Lamar Fontainne, relating his experiencies as a prisoner during the Civil War; Confederate roster; genealogical notes on twenty families; marriage and death records from Jno. Lynch's daybook; blueprint showing coal seams in lower half of Raleigh county. Personal correspondence deals mainly with law practice; politics; the Tidewater and Deepwater Railway companies; appointment as Regent of West Viriginia University in 1887; one ALS from S. B. Brown requesting information about Hon. John Echols for use in a history of the Virginia Convention of 1861, also, copy of information sent in reply.

Civil War reminiscences of Andrew Nelson Campbell of Union, Monroe Co., W.Va. Campbell was a private in Jubal Early's army in 1864 and marched in and fought in the Shenandoah Campaign of 1864. The reminiscences discuss the battles of Cedar Creek, Spotsylvania Courthouse, Gettysburg, and more.

This is the third accession of the papers of Andrew Nelson Campbell. Mr. Campbell was an attorney in Monroe County, W. Va. He served in the Confederate Army and was a graduate of the Washington and Lee University Law School. He represented Monroe County as a Delegate in the State Legislature, 1872, and was a member of the Board of Regents of West Virginia University. He was, also, Judge of the 10th Judicial Circuit, 1888-1896.
