[Topographical Maps of Virginia] (37 maps)

0.1 Cubic Feet 20 x 16.5 in. (37 maps)
Abstract Or Scope
This collection of topographical maps was separated from the J. Hoge Tyler Family Collection (Ms1967-002). The set is comprised of 37 individually titled maps, arranged by assigned, pencilled-in numbers according to geographic location, with 1 (Winchester) being in the northwest and 34 (Norfolk) in the southeast. (The list below includes penciled numbers in parentheses.) Three additional maps are labeled A-C (Richmond, Bermuda Hundred, and Petersburg) and consist of a smaller-scale topography of the Richmond area. Areas depicted by the maps were surveyed between 1882 and 1892, and the maps were finalized in editions ranging between 1889 and 1894. Between maps 33 (Hillsville) and 34 (Norfolk) is a sizeable geographic area that appears to be missing from this collection. Map 34 (Norfolk) shows some damage at its western edge, with some of the map missing.

Content Warning

ARVAS is an aggregator of archival resources. ARVAS does not have control of the descriptive language used in our members’ finding aids.

Finding aids may contain historical terms and phrases, reflecting the shared attitudes and values of the community from which they were collected, but are offensive to modern readers. These include demeaning and dehumanizing references to race, ethnicity, and nationality; enslaved or free status; physical or mental ability; religion; sex; and sexual orientation and gender identity.

Many institutions and organizations are in the process of reviewing and revising their descriptive language, with the intent to describe materials in more humanizing, inclusive, and harm-reductive ways. As members revise their descriptive language, their changes will eventually be reflected in their ARVAS finding aids.
