Micajah Woods Papers 1847-1926

This collection, consisting of ca. 760 items, (5 Hollinger boxes, 22-1/2 linear shelf inches), includes the papers of the Woods Familyof Albemarle County, Virginia, from 1847 to 1926. Correspondence comprises the major part of the collection and deals with a variety of subjects. The correspondence between Micajah Woodsand his parents during the Civil War includes detailed descriptions of the campaigns and battles in which he fought, among them the battles of Port Republic, Second Manassas, Crampton's Gap, Sharpsburg, New Market, Second Cold Harbor, Lynchburg, Fisher's Hill, and Monocacy. The men under whom he served included "Stonewall" Jackson, J. E. B. Stuart, and John Floyd. A portion of the post-Civil War correspondence regards Civil War Veterans' Reunions and recollections of battles and campaigns.

Papers of Jedediah Hotchkiss

The papers of Jedediah "Jed" Hotchkiss contain ca. 1550 items (8 Hollinger boxes, ca. 3 linear feet), and consist largely of personal correspondence, bound volumes, and business records dating from 1846 to 1912. Included in the collection is material pertaining to Hotchkiss' career as a teacher and schoolmaster, his period of service under General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson as a scout and map-maker during the Civil War, his later involvement in the mapping and development of West Virginia coalfields, and the settling of his estate. The collection also includes material pertaining to Hotchkiss' son-in-law, Samuel Thomas McCullough, who was a noted veteran of the Confederate States of America Army . These documents include correspondence, notes, and a set of diaries detailing McCullough's experiences in the Civil War. Other subjects of possible interest include the papers of the Confederate Monument Association of Staunton, Virginia and Augusta County, Virginia documents concerning a 1746 exploration of the Shenandoah Valley , and papers pertaining to Loch Willow School and Mossy Creek Academy.

Includes genealogy and Civil War records collected by Roy Bird Cook of Lewis County, West Virginia. Series 1 through 5 were compiled by Marcellus W. Zimmerman. They include correspondence, church records, academic records, genealogical records, research manuscripts, and clippings regarding primarily the genealogy and history of Lewisburg and Greenbrier County, and the life and career of Confederate Brigadier General Alexander W. Reynolds. Series 6 through 8 were collected by Roy Bird Cook. They include military records and clippings regarding West Virginia units, the Confederate 31st Virginia Infantry, and other Confederate units from Virginia; there are also business and miscellaneous records, including ledgers, clippings, research notes, etc. Series 9 includes oversized material from earlier series.

Records in this collection contain information on the Association's financial accounting, revenue, expenditures, employees and employee benefits, investments, taxes, and other financial concerns. There is a very limited amount pertaining to fundraising efforts and/or private donations, which can be found in the files of Mount Vernon's development department (currently unprocessed). Bulk date 1870s-2000s.

Shotwell law firm collection, 1823/1888

This collection contains a bound lawyer's docket book, with entries from 1823 to 1836 and from 1842 to 1888, both indexed. The earliest entries are likely from the law office of Chauncey Dewey in Cadiz, Ohio, during his association with Steubenville lawyer Benjamin Tappan. The later entries are first from the law office of Dewey & Shotwell, a partnership between Chauncey Dewey and Stuart B. Shotwell, also in Cadiz. Dewey retired from the partnership in 1849, so entries after that date are from the law office of Stuart B. Shotwell in Cadiz. Most entries give the case name, list of case actions, and receipts of payments. Also included in this collection is a tin sign reading "Shotwell's Law Office."
