Catlett family papers of Caroline County, Virginia. Correspondence that reflects the hard times in Virginia following the Civil War. Collection contains 72 original letters. Written by various extended family members, the majority of the letters are addressed to Arthur Catlett, a former Confederate Soldier and Virginia resident who moved to Texas shortly after the Civil War. Transcriptions for almost all letters, provided by the collection's donor, Elizabeth Jean Voss, are included. Inclusive dates 1865-1921.

Papers collected include colonial era documents, deeds, surveys, the diary of Sally Fairfax (1771-1772), legal papers, a copy of the Dettingen Parish (Prince William County, Va.) vestry book which contains minutes, indentures, and other (1745-1802), and photostat copy of the letterbook (1801) of Col. John Tayloe of Mount Airy, Va. Fairfax Harrison's papers include his correspondence with individuals and institutions concerning his interest in Virginia History. Prominent correspondents include John Stewart Bryan, David I. Bushnell, Worthington C. Ford, Douglas Southall Freeman, William G. Stanard, Clayton Torrence, Earl Gregg Swem, Lyon G. Tyler and Langbourne M. Williams. Subjects include Sir Edmund Andros,Francis Nicholson, Francis Fauquier, debtors' prisons, parish boundaries, Culpeper family, thoroughbred horses, county records, and the publishing of Harrison's works as well as the publishing of Robert Armistead Stewart's Index to Printed Virginia Genealogies and E. G. Swem's Virginia Historical Index. The collection also includes notes by Wilson Miles Cary concerning the Cary family and the books at "Carysbrook," Fluvanna County, Va.

The Gregory Family papers follow the family of Virginia Governor John Munford Gregory and wife Amanda Wallace through three generations with letters dating from the 1820's to the 1920's. Most items are letters between family members and grant insight into the daily activities and concerns of the Gregory family. The collection also includes correspondence between members of the Gregory family and other acquaintances, including members of the John Tyler family. While most letters are of a personal nature, some also touch on the issues of politics, education, religion, and agriculture. The collection is rich in genealogical information on the Gregory family and related Croshaw, Graves, West, and White families, as well as history of the family's war involvement. In addition to letters, the collection includes newspaper articles, family documents, and two diaries kept by John M. Gregory's daughter, Mattie Galbraith, in the late 1870's. There are also seven cased images of members of the Gregory Family, including Amanda Wallace Gregory, Amanda's sister (Elizabeth Christie Powell), William Wallace Gregory, and Mary "Mollie" Gregory.

This collection contains the family papers of members of the Grigsby and Galt Families. Mary Blair Grigsby married William W. Galt in 1881. The collection contains papers of various members of the Grigsby family, particulary Hugh Blair Grigsby who was a historian and Chancellor of The College of William and Mary and his son, Hugh Carrington Grigsby who lived his entire life at the family farm, Edgehill, in Charlotte County, Virginia.

This collection contains letters to James Davy Proctor, an English immigrant living in Virginia, written by his family and friends back home. The later letters were written to Proctor's wife, Louisa Frances "Fannie" Wilson. The incoming letters to Proctor were written mainly by his sisters Harriet and Sarah, his father James, and his Aunt Elizabeth. Other correspondents include Maud M. Rogers, Alice Jane Rodgers, and Jack Phillips.The letters inquire about Proctor's whereabouts, his health, and his prospects in the United States and also share news from back home.

The Maury family papers contains materials documenting the lives of the Maury Family of Virginia, New York City and Liverpool, England from 1777-1977. The collection includes the letters and business papers of James Maury (1746-1840), the first American consul to Liverpool, England, and the letters of his second wife, Margaret Rutson Maury (1805-1882), of Liverpool. Letters, business papers, legal papers, and diaries of the next two generations of the Maury family, including Ann Maury (1832-1890) of Liverpool and New York, Rutson Maury (1805-1882) of Liverpool and New York, and oceanographer Matthew Fontaine Maury (1806-1873) are also included. The collection also contains genealogical material, photographs and cookbooks. Subjects covered include tobacco and cotton trade, general discussions about the Civil War from both the American and British perspective, travel, and gender studies.

Comprised mostly of letters to, from, and about Nathaniel Beverley Tucker (1820-1890), a Virginian journalist and diplomat, his son Beverley Dandridge Tucker (1846-1930), a bishop, and their friends and family dating between 1830 and 1903. Family correspondents include Charles Ellis, Thomas H. Ellis, and Powhatan Ellis (brothers of Jane Shelton (Ellis) Tucker); Virginia Sarah Tucker Brooke, sister of Nathaniel Beverley Tucker ; Jane Shelton (Ellis) Tucker, wife Nathaniel Beverley Tucker; Anna Maria Washington Tucker, daughter of John Augustine Washington and wife of Beverley Dandridge Tucker; and Beverley Dandridge Tucker and Charles Ellis Tucker, sons of Nathaniel Beverley Tucker. Notable correspondents include Franklin Pierce, Jefferson Davis, John Slidell, Sidney Webster, J.G. Blaine, Walker Blaine, Judah P. Benjamin, Stephen Massett, Hamilton Fish, Benjamin Harrison, and Stephen D. Lee.

Twenty-four letters written by members of the Niebling and Duke families. Seventeen of them are written to Salena Niebling Duke. Salena Niebling married Richard Hardin Duke and moved to Richmond, Virginia from Baltimore, Maryland. The couple had three sons, Frank M. Duke, Walter Garland Duke, and Charles R. H. Duke. This group of correspondence spans geographically from Virginia and Maryland to Massachusetts and Illinois, and features letters from all three Duke sons, Richard Duke, his brother P.H. Duke, Salena Duke's mother Elizabeth Crocker Niebling, her sister Eliza Keech, and another sister with the initials M.A.P among others.

The formats include legislation, annual reports, histories, speeches, resolutions, reports, rebuttals and more. Topics include abolition of slavery, Mexican War, information and reports about the Civil War, Army register for 1858, annual reports for railroads and banks, historical paper on Christ Church in Norfolk, Virginia (1878), Governor Pierpoint's address to "People of Virginia" (May 19, 1865) and more. This collection appears to be material purposely removed from larger bound reports. Many of the topics relate to matters that concern Virginia and other southern states.
