Fleming was closely associated with James O. Watson in the development of the coal and railroad industry in the Monongahela Valley. There are scattered papers, including several hundred sermons of Benjamin F. Fleming (1810-1876); one common pleas book; two "Memorandum of Decisions" books from the law firm of A.B. Morgan, Matthew M. Neely, Okey L. Patteson, Chapman Revercomb, and Howard Sutherland. This collection also includes the business and legal papers, ca.1840-1890, of James H. Carroll, Kingwood attorney and editor of the PRESTON COUNTY HERALD.? Subjects include the presidential elections of 1856 and 1884 in West Virginia.? Other papers relate to Kingwood and area mercantile firms, and the operation of the PRESTON COUNTY JOURNAL, 1891-1894; and a circulation record of Preston County newspapers, 1889-1897. Correspondents include Gideon D. Camden and Henry G. Davis.

Correspondence, newspaper clippings, and other papers, of a state senate minority leader, 1899-1901, prominent Fayette County lawyer, and Democratic committeeman. Subjects include Osenton's early life; his law training at Georgetown University; his election to the state senate as a "silver" Democrat; William Jennings Bryan's tour of West Virginia, 1908; the presidential election of 1908; and Champ Clark's battle for the Democratic nomination, 1912. The papers also include a collection of broadsides pertaining to West Virginia, Kentucky, and national politics, 1898-1920; and the business and legal papers, ca.1847-1880, of Osenton's father-in-law, Arthur J. Lansdowne of Grayson, Kentucky. Correspondents include John D. Alderson, William J. Bryan, William E. Chilton, and Champ Clark.

Legal papers of a Morgantown lawyer, partner of United States Senator Waitman T. Willey, prosecuting attorney of Monongalia County, state senator, and judge of the Eleventh Circuit Court. Included are papers which relate to Bunker's Civil War service and Willey's legal practice. There are a few items of correspondence on land speculation and immigration in post-Civil War West Virginia.

Business papers of a Keyser attorney who was judge of the sixteenth judicial circuit, 1904-1920; member of the West Virginia Legislature, 1895-1896 and 1901-1904; and a member of many educational, commercial, and financial boards in Mineral County. Correspondents include John J. Cornwell, H.G. Davis, A.G. Dayton, S.B. Elkins, and Cecil B. Highland.

Correspondence, clippings and other documents collected through 1953, on George Rogers Clark Floyd, secretary of state for the Territory of Wisconsin, 1845-1848, member of the West Virginia House of Delegates, 1872-1873, and longtime resident of Logan County. There is data on other members of the Floyd family.

This collection comprises the personal and business correspondence, as well as financial and legal papers of the Goshorn family of Wheeling, West Virginia, including papers from members of several allied families. Highlights include letters from William S. Goshorn during his Civil War imprisonment and letters from a Virginia legislator in the House of Delegates (1833). Clippings pertain to election returns for Braxton County and the nation; Taylor's editorials; letters to the editor; population statistics; and politics. A section of the volume consists of Taylor's record of visits to the county schools as County Superintendent of Free Schools, 1869, and a record of personal accounts.
