Special Collections includes manuscript collections, rare books, and the University Archives, as well as state, local and historical maps and photographs. The collection contains a letter from Anthony K. Simmons describing the health of son Ed, a private in Company A, 28th Virginia Infantry recently wounded in the Battle of Gaines' Mill, and relating Americna Civil War news from Manchester, Virginia.

Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA) (1889-2009)
The records largely document the recent history of Smithfield Plantation, ancestral home of the Preston family, focusing particularly on its restoration beginning in 1962. While much of the renovation occurred in the 1960s, many of the records detail other renovation projects done in the 1970s and 1980s. The collection also includes historical and other related documents dating from before the original Preston family's residence at Smithfield.

The August Dietz Civil War Collection contains materials originally collected by August Dietz, Richmond, VA, philatelist and printer. The collection contains single editions of Civil War-era newspapers, photographs, a woodcut and prints, quartermaster records, playing cards, a handwritten memoir, correspondence, and reproductions of stamps from the Civil War.
