McGraw, John Thomas, 1856-1920

Papers of a Grafton attorney who was a lawyer for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and prosecuting attorney of Taylor County, West Virginia, assistant to Governor J.B. Jackson, collector of internal revenue for West Virginia, and a member of the Democratic National Committee. There are case papers and letters pertaining to McGraw's law practice; records relating to the purchase, sale, and development of timber, coal, and oil lands; and records of his directorships in the Grafton and Greenbrier Railroad, and the Iron Valley and Morgantown Railroad companies. The papers reflect many aspects of activities of the Democratic Party in West Virginia, ca. 1880-1899. There is a scrapbook of Rose McGraw relating largely to Mount de Chantal Academy at Wheeling. There is also a Yale Law School Senior Examination for 1876. Correspondents include J.N. Camden, John J. Cornwell, H.G. Davis, Alston G. Dayton, C.J. Faulkner, A.B. Fleming, John B. Floyd, Alvaro F. Oak Grove Baptist Church

Articles of faith, rules of decorum, meeting minutes, membership rolls, and a church history of a Taylor County church of the Regular Baptist denomination. The records reflect the problems and growth of a church which changed its name and location from Laurel Run to Oak Grove and part of whose records were lost in a fire. There is a record of this church belonging to the local Goshen Baptist Association whose most prominent member is the historic sister church, Forks of the Cheat Baptist.

Reed General Store (Boothsville, W.Va.)

Twenty-four ledgers document the operations of the Reed General Store in Boothsville, Taylor County, West Virginia, from 1851 to 1893. These account books contain an inventory of items sold, mainly food products, to identified customers and a record of credit extended to those who were given loans to purchase at the store. The books reflect the organization of the store by Joseph Reed, who along with his uncle, Robert Reed, helped to found and develop this town, in which the family also owned and operated a tannery, mill, and tavern. Also included is a description of the family and a list of descendants.

Robinson family

Most of the letters are to Helen M. Robinson of Fetterman, Taylor County, West Virginia, from relatives and friends. Subjects discussed include housekeeping, fashions, farming, schools, religion, and the Civil War from both the Confederate and Union perspectives. There are frequent, specific references to the political and military state-of-affairs in the upper Ohio Valley region.

Manuscript and printed material, and pictures collected by Rufus A. West, a Morgantown antiquarian and faculty member of the College of Engineering, West Virginia University. There are also a small number of Mr. West's personal papers, consisting of letters concerning West Virginia University College of Engineering, Oak Grove Cemetery Association, and the Wesley Methodist Church, all of Morgantown, and business records of the Town Hill Service Station, owned by Mr. West.

West Virginia Postmasters

The record of the appointment of postmasters in the following WV counties: Randolph, Ritchie, Roane, Summers, Taylor, Tucker, Tyler, Upshur, Wayne, Webster, Wetzel, Wirt, Wood and Wyoming. The record shows the dates of establishment and discontinuance of post offices, their changes of name, and the names of and the appointment dates of their postmasters. Beginning in 1870, it shows the names of post offices to which mail from discontinued offices was sent. The record also shows the dates of Presidential appointments of postmasters and the dates of their confirmation by the Senate, usually the dates that post offices were authorized to issue money orders, and occasionally the dates on which the locations of offices were changed.

White Day Glades Tannery

A ledger of customers, prices, dates and worked completed by a Taylor County tannery, mill and store owned and operated by the Corrothers family. The mill turned out a variety of leather products ranging from boots to book bindings. Included are entries on repair work particularly shoe repairs. There are also receipts of this mill with an address at McConkey, WV, especially tax receipts. Also included are photos of William A. C. Corrothers and a genealogy of his family.

Genealogy research papers compiled by W. Guy Tetrick and his son Willis G. Tetrick, Jr. The Tetricks were from Harrison County and the material in the collection mainly regards families of Harrison County and north central West Virginia. The collection contains mostly original genealogical compilations and family histories. It also contains personal and business correspondence; financial records; publications regarding local and state history; newspapers and news clippings; obituaries, cemetery records; records of the Sons of the American Revolution; and other material.
