Collection includes family correspondence of the Bowman, Veach, and Leeper families. Manuscripts include a recounting of the Civil War event known as "Jones' Raid." In another document Nathaniel Cochrane, an ancestor of Thomas Leeper, recounts his capture and imprisonment by indigenous people, along with a biography of Cochrane. Daily life for that time is captured in "Home Life of the Leeper Family." Other typescript histories include "Monongah," Thomas Leeper's diary regarding heavy rains and high waters of 1888, a history of West Monongah High School, and "History of the Leeper Family."

Three ledgers of Henry Prickett (1803-1894) of Marion County, WV, great-grandson of Captain Jacob Prickett Sr. (1722-1798) of Prickett's Fort fame. 1) 1825-44, 250+ pages, recording technical information such as tables of measure for currency, land, cloth, weights, etc.; also records transactions of his tanning business. 2) 1845-70s, ca. 300 pages, recording business transactions and personal and community events (including births, weather, visits by relatives, poetry, etc.). 3) 1880-1886, ca. 160 pages, recording business transactions and personal activities (including cutting grass, stacking hay, purchase of goods such as nails, molasses, wheat, eggs, etc.). There is also one ledger of Finches Run Sunday School (1850-74 "scattered"; includes maxims, essays, financial records, and three hymns in manuscript), and one of minutes of the Centerville Literary Society (1879, 40 pp.), both of Marion County, WV.

The manuscript diary of Henry Solomon White, a Corporal and Orderly Sergeant in Company N, Sixth Regiment, [West] Virginia Volunteer Infantry, covering the period of 24 September 1861 to 26 September 1864. Company N was organized at Camp White, in 1861 for a three-year tour of duty guarding the B.&O. and North Western railroads. The company was stationed at various times at Burton, Littleton, Barrackville, Fairmont, Clarksburg, Bridgeport, Grafton, and Webster. Squads of this company were detailed for special duty and scouting detail in Cornwallis, Ritchie County; Camp Burne; Camp Wilkinson; and in Monongalia, Marion, and Roane counties; and Fayette and Greene counties, Pennsylvania. Company N was on duty in Fairmont during the Jones Raid in 1863.

The collection consists largely of correspondence to Morgantown businessman John Rogers from relatives in Pennsylvania and Maryland. It also includes two letters from Sgt. William A. Widney, who was assigned to the U.S. War Department during the Civil War, to a Morgantown friend (possibly William Hennen). One letter was written by an unidentified woman to her grandson, a West Virginia University student.

Correspondence, legal papers, photographs, and printed materials of John W. Mason (1842-1917). Mason was a circuit court and state Supreme Court judge, member of the Virginia State Debt Commission, and commissioner of Internal Revenue. The general correspondence contains personal and business letters, as well as manuscript speeches, notebooks, and reports. The period while Mason was circuit judge is particularly sparse. Also includes Internal Revenue correspondence consisting of about 8,500 pages in letter press copy books. Roughly half of the collection is devoted to his legal papers and printed materials concerning law in general. Subjects include early development of the Republican Party in West Virginia; political campaigns in West Virginia from 1870-1916; Monongalia Academy; industrial development; Internal Revenue Service (1889-1893); the Virginia Debt question; early banking development in Grafton; and the development of coal companies, particularly around Fairmont. Correspondents include Arthur I. Boreman, A.W. Campbell, Stephen B. Elkins, Benjamin Harrison, Francis H. Pierpont, and others.

Papers of the Kendall Family of Mannington District, Marion County, West Virginia. Family names Hibbs and Cunningham also appear frequently in the collection. Contains the following series: correspondence; financial records; land records; legal records; legal correspondence; election records; funeral records; oil, gas, and coal records; subjects; photograph; and scrapbook. Election records includes a list of voters (1908) and a poll record for a U.S. Presidential election (1928). Oil, gas and coal records contains leases and agreements concerning drilling and mining on Kendall family land in the Mannington District (ca. 1900-1930). The Scrapbook contains pension records regarding Minerva Hibbs, widow of William W. Hibbs who served with the 12th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War; it also contains a printed invitation to a "Mother's Day Service" and two hand-written tributes to mothers, among other items.

There are also photocopies of primary sources of information supplementary to the White Day Creek book, including: letters and financial ledger of the Watson family (1820-1890); essay titled "Smithtown Local History" (1922); business ledger of George Washington Stevens, a cobbler (1890s); deeds and estate sale documents of William Morris (1854); grist mill business ledger of Sam Smith (1894); financial ledger and "folk wisdom" of Levi Devault (ca. 1875-1900); and the history of the Weaver family, including estate sale information (1854). The history of education in Marion County is documented in the photocopied "1992 Dedication of the Snodgrass One-Room Schoolhouse Museum; October 30, 1992." (Original in Printed Ephemera Collection.) This dedication program also features a reminiscence of Ethel Ferrell (b. 1898), a Marion County school teacher.

Wherry, a student at Jefferson College, Pa., in 1859; a genealogy of the DeVaul, Haun, [F]ast families of Marion and Monongalia counties, 1817-1957; an essay on "Immigration" by George Whitham, 1896, favoring immigration restriction because of the increased number coming from " the Latin races of southeastern Europe;" land surveys from dead books, 1827-1933, mostly in Monongalia County: and a scrapbook of pictures, early 20th century, including WVU buildings (Martin Hall, the old library, The Drill Field area), Raven Rocks at Uffington, the Cheat River and Cooper's Rocks, Cascades on Deckers Creek, Oak Park near Masontown, White Rocks in Marion County in 1912, and numerous unidentified people.
