Description:
The Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) houses one of the largest and most significant collections of rare and unique materials of any educational institution of comparable size in the United States. Focused on Virginia history but with nationally and internationally important collections, the Manuscripts Collection includes letters, diaries, journals, scrapbooks, business records, organizational minutes, and other items that provide evidence of events great and small and the daily lives of Americans of all backgrounds. The Rare Books Collection, with volumes dating from the 15th century to the present, is strong in dogs, Virginia-related items, early Virginia family libraries, gardening and natural history, religion, book arts, printing history, travel, science, and medicine. The University Archives documents the history of William & Mary from 1693 to the present, including a wide range of materials from administrative records, student organization records, and alumni papers to photographs, audio-visual materials, and artifacts.

William Woodville, Jr. Letters, 1855/1864 0.01 Linear Foot

Letters from William Woodville, Jr. of Baltimore, Maryland written to his wife 'Nan' (Ann C. Schley Woodville) during the Civil War while serving as an aide to Brig. General Harry T. Hays, CSA. His letters describe camp life and military maneuvers mostly in Virginia, including the Peninsular Campaign. A marriage license of Woodville to Schley dated 1855 is also included. The collection contains original letters and typescripts of original letters.

Willie G. M. Letter to Sue, 1861 0.01 Linear Foot

Letter from Willie G.M. to Sue dated February the Last, 1861 from Gordonsville, Virginia. In it, Willie writes of wanting to be with Sue but dismisses her proposition for her and Jose to visit. He insists that Jose has too much of a desire to be "white" for his liking. The letter continues as he laments his aching neck and absence from her.

Wills family

Correspondence, 1863-1864, of Mary J. Wills, Bedford County, Virginia with her husband, Charles A. Wills of the 58th Virginia Infantry Regiment (Company I). Also includes letters to Mary J. Wills from her brothers, John A. Bradley and Joseph M. Bradley, and correspondence of her sister Sarah F. Foster with her husband Habun R. Foster. John A. Bradley and Joseph M. Bradley served in the 58th Virginia Infantry and Habun R. Foster served in the 34th Virginia Infantry Regiment. The Battle of Second Manassas is described as is the battleground at Seven Pines (Fair Oaks). The collection includes a letter from Robert A. Bradley of the 58th Virginia Infantry Regiment.

Appointment, 10 May 1836, of Winfield Scott to the rank of lieutenant-general (signed by Andrew Jackson and Lewis Cass) and letter, 26 May 1865, of Winfield Scott to Quartermaster Capt. [?] Morgan concerning fuel and quarters and his departure for West Point.

Wingfield-Britton family papers, 1857/1983 1.17 Linear Feet

Photos, letters, a diary, an account book, and an album belonging to members of the Wingfield-Britton family. The collection ranges from pre-civil war to the 1980s, with the bulk of the material dated around the early 1900s. The correspondence covers a number of topics including health and family life, farming, and travel in the north-western valley region of Virginia.
