Description:

The Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library administers over 13 million manuscripts, 3.6 million items in the University archives, and 325,000 rare books, as well as approximately 5,000 maps, over 4,000 broadsides; more than 250,000 photographs and small prints; over 8,000 reels of microfilm; and substantial holdings of audio recordings, motion picture films, and ephemera.

The major emphasis of the Department’s collections are American history and literature, with additional substantive collections in Virginiana, British literature, African-American history, book arts, the history of sporting and World War I, among others. In addition, the library serves as the University Archives, holding records of historic significance to UVA.

Miscellaneous Letters and Documents collection, 1824/2010 1.25 Linear Feet

The scope and content of the documents are diverse. This collection includes papers on the history of the Paul Goodloe McIntire Memorial Clinic, the development of the Otolaryngology Program at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and women medical students at UVA in the 1920s. Also included are a letter from Rene Laennec, inventor of the stethoscope, and another from Carl Rokitansky, a famous pathologist. There is a series of letters from George W. Banks, a medical student in the 1890s; 1831 lecture notes on cholera and its treatment; examinations by the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered Nurses from the 1920s; the early 1900s daybook of Dr. J. E. Copeland; William P. Braxton's lecture cards from medical courses at the University of Pennsylvania in the 1830s; an account book kept by [Dr.?] Robert Gamble in the 1830s; two 19th century recipe books; and documents concerning Nuzhet O. Atuk and the beginning of hemodialysis at the University of Virginia Hospital.
