World War II Correspondence Collection 1.5 Linear Feet

This collection contains more than 700 letters, the vast majority dating to World War II between 1940 and 1945. Each of the first five series deal with numerous letters to/from a primary correspondent, whether husband and wife, family members, or varying levels of acquaintance that date between 1940 and 1945. The final two series contain correspondence and ephemera unrelated to World War II that was included in the collection when purchased.

The Writers' Program was a federal New Deal program (1935-1942) that employed jobless individuals with literary and writing skills for the purpose of researching and recording a broad assemblage of information regarding their states and local counties. This collection contains some of the records of the West Virginia division of the Program (the bulk of which are in A&M 454), including material regarding Mineral and Hampshire Counties, as well as Berkeley, Grant, Hardy, and Pendleton Counties. Yancey family

Papers of the Yancey family of Woodville, Rappahannock County, Va. and Culpeper County, Va. Includes letters, 1844-1873 and accounts, chiefly 1834-1853. Concerns John W. Yancey, William T. Yancey, James P. Yancey and the estate of Major Yancey. There is a letter, 1844, of Charles Yancey of Tennessee concerning his administration of the Craven estate. The Craven will designated the New York Colonization Society as the legatee, but the will was broken. This collection also contains material relative to slavery.
