This collection was organized by Richard J. DeMartino during his tenure as one of the "historian advisors" to the International Military Tribunal for the Far East between 1946-1948.

The Duke law firm papers include correspondence, case files, legal, insuarance, and financial records, as well as ledgers. The files provide extensive documentation of a small-town family practice. Since the insurance business and the Dukes's family business affairs were handled in the same office as the law practice, these files had remained with the legal files. The family correspondence found with these papers was transferred to Special Collections in Alderman Library.

This collection contains a bound lawyer's docket book, with entries from 1823 to 1836 and from 1842 to 1888, both indexed. The earliest entries are likely from the law office of Chauncey Dewey in Cadiz, Ohio, during his association with Steubenville lawyer Benjamin Tappan. The later entries are first from the law office of Dewey & Shotwell, a partnership between Chauncey Dewey and Stuart B. Shotwell, also in Cadiz. Dewey retired from the partnership in 1849, so entries after that date are from the law office of Stuart B. Shotwell in Cadiz. Most entries give the case name, list of case actions, and receipts of payments. Also included in this collection is a tin sign reading "Shotwell's Law Office."

Family papers of the Webb-Prentis families and numerous other Virginians including: correspondence, business papers, legal papers, Nansemond County, Va. papers, genealogy, miscellaneous papers, bound volumes including accounts, legal, medical, memorandum, drawings, oversize items, and lecture notebooks and transcripts.

The papers of the Cocke family of Fluvanna County, Virginia, and related Barraud family, Faulcon family, and other families, consist of ca. 25,000 items, (194 Hollinger boxes, ca. 64.5 linear shelf feet), 1725- 1939, and contains correspondence, legal and financial papers, diaries of John Hartwell Cocke, Louisa Maxwell Holmes Cocke, and Lucy Cocke, minutes of the Board of Visitors of the University ofVirginia, diagrams and sketches concerning the University, bound volumes, sketches and drawings, college and school notes, poetry, orations and speeches, essays, genealogy, and lists pertaining to agriculture, music and other subjects.

31 manuscript volumes and ca. 1400 manuscripts of the Nourse family of Weston, Herfordshire, England; Berkeley County, W. Va.; Washington, D.C.; and Weston, Fauquier County, Va.; and of related Bull and Morris families.

Deeds, plats, patents, and other legal papers concerning lands in Albemarle, Fluvanna, Goochland, Henrico, and Powhatan Counties, several of which establish the chain of title to Edgehill. Deeds for land owned by the Randolph Family (Richard Randolph, Jr., Thomas Mann Randolph, Thomas Jefferson Randolph), the Eppes Family (Francis Eppes, Richard Eppes, and William Eppes), and the Nicholas Family (John Nicholas, George Nicholas, and Robert Carter Nicholas.) Jefferson items are more fully calendared under dates 6 June 1751 and 29 March 1762. [1]

The papers of Bradley T. Johnsonconsist of ca. 4000 items covering the years 1676 to 1937, and are primarily the personal correspondence of the members of three families: Johnson, Rutherfoordand Saunders. By far the greatest number of letters and documents concern the affairs of the Johnson familyand Bradley T. Johnsonduring the period 1840-1880. The collection includes a great number of letters to Bradley T. Johnsonfrom his mother, Eleanor Murdock (Tyler) Johnson, and his wife, Jane Claudia (Saunders) Johnson. Items of particular interest include: copies of letters from George Washingtonto Thomas Johnsonrelative to Thomas Johnson's appointment to the United States Supreme Courtand letters to General Bradley T. Johnsonfrom Jubal A. Early, Joseph E. Johnston, Thomas J. Jackson, Jefferson Davis, Wade Hampton, J. S. Mosby, W. H. Fitzhugh Lee, Henry Adamsand Theodore Roosevelt.

This collection consist of ca. 16,000 items, 1787-1936, and contains the papers of the Bondurant familyof Buckingham County, Virginia, and the Morrison familyof Rockbridge County, Virginiawho were related through the marriage of Alexander Joseph Bondurantand Emily MacFarland Morrisonin 1859. Alexander J. Bondurantand Emily (Morrison) Bondurantwere the chief correspondents in this collection. Alexander J. Bondurant(1836-1910) was a Confederatesoldier, farmer, politician, superintendent of Buckingham County, Va.schools, professor of agriculture at Auburn University, and tobacco consultant to the government of Australia. His father, Thomas Moseley Bondurant(1797-1862), was a landowner, member of the board of trustees of Hampden-Sydney College, a soldier in the War of 1812, a member of the Virginia Senate, and one of the founders of the Richmond Whig. His oldest son, Alexander Lee Bondurant(1865-1937) was professor of Latin and head of the graduate school of the University of Mississippi.

The Goss family papers (1820-2014; 4 cubic feet) contain Civil War letters and documents including a pardon for Ebenezer Walker Goss from President Andrew Johnson in 1865, manuscript receipts of goods sold to the Confederate Army, enslaved person receipts, and papers (mostly correspondence) related to their 19th and early 20th century family in Somerset, Virginia. Business records reflect their apple orchard, farming, and dairy business which was maintained by Charlotte "Lottie" Goss (1861-1914), and her brother Ebenezer "Lee" Goss,(1863-1934). The family papers also contain correspondence with William and Marion du Pont about horses and dogs. There are also letters from suitors, particularly J. Frank Lobingier, pursuing Charlotte "Lottie" Goss (1880-1909), from around the country. Miss Goss lived for a while in Pomona California, and Saltito, Mexico. The family papers also contain photographs and genealogy describing their family history in Virginia.
