Description:
The Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) houses one of the largest and most significant collections of rare and unique materials of any educational institution of comparable size in the United States. Focused on Virginia history but with nationally and internationally important collections, the Manuscripts Collection includes letters, diaries, journals, scrapbooks, business records, organizational minutes, and other items that provide evidence of events great and small and the daily lives of Americans of all backgrounds. The Rare Books Collection, with volumes dating from the 15th century to the present, is strong in dogs, Virginia-related items, early Virginia family libraries, gardening and natural history, religion, book arts, printing history, travel, science, and medicine. The University Archives documents the history of William & Mary from 1693 to the present, including a wide range of materials from administrative records, student organization records, and alumni papers to photographs, audio-visual materials, and artifacts.

Wasson-Cox Diary, 1826/1946, bulk 1826/1853 0.1 Linear Foot

Diary, 1826-1946, of Lydia Wasson (1800-1853) of North Carolina and La Porte, Indiana, her daughter Charlotte Wasson Cox, and her grandson William Wasson Cox (b. 1857). At the beginning of the diary, Lydia Wasson, a devout Quaker, chronicles her life from birth to 1826 when the regular diary entries begin. Toward the end of her life she dictated her entries to her daughter, who after her mother's death continued to write in the diary a few more times at irregular intervals. Charlotte Wasson also titled the diary "A brief sketch of the religious exercises and varied experiences of Lydia Wasson written by herself - age 52 years - at her death in 1852."

Welch Family Account Books, 1767/1880 1.6 Linear Feet

Account books of several generations of the Welch family of Fauquier County, Virginia. The earliest book includes notes, 1767-1778, of Thomas Glascock. The early volumes were probably kept by or for Sylvester Welch (1764-1832), the later ones by or for Sylvester Welch (b. 1800).

The collection contains correspondents, a diary, genealogy, photographs, and printed materials, documenting the West-Callis family. The West-Callis family is a Virginia family, that includes Georgianna Calllis, daughter of William Callis and Elizabeth (Simmons) of Norfolk, Virginia. Her husband Albert West, who served in the Confederate Army building arsenals.

"Cousins" may refer to Conway II, Mrs. Neale, and Mrs. Lewis. Fire set by enslaved persons at Mt. Holly; yellow fever; his chances of practicing in Norfolk with so many doctors having died; railroad lines between Blacks and Whites, Virginia (now Blackstone) and Clarksville, Virginia deplores difference in Northern and Southern women; buying of plantation, "Milbank" comparison of Philadelphia doctors with country doctors; description of Methodists; opinions on right to vote; desire to sell enslaved persons and Black Africans and election of Francis McNeese Whittle as bishop. Includes letter of Fortescue Whittle.
