David Boston Stewart (1826-1915), a farmer from Monongalia County, West Virginia, who served with the 48th Virginia Infantry and the 20th Virginia Cavalry during the Civil War and was a member of the Virginia Legislature from 1863 to 1864. Collection primarily consists of letters written to D.B. Stewart between 1862 and 1864 and between 1894 and 1906 that concern Stewart's time as a Confederate prisoner of war during the Civil War, and his personal life in the 1890s and early 1900s.

David Boston Stewart (1826-1915), a farmer from Monongalia County, West Virginia, who served with the 48th Virginia Infantry and the 20th Virginia Cavalry during the Civil War and was a member of the Virginia Legislature from 1863 to 1864. Includes records from several generations of the Deakins family of Montgomery County, Maryland and north central West Virginia. William (1742-1798) and Francis (1739-1804) Deakins, among the first generation, were active as land speculators after the American Revolution, applying their skills as surveyors to leverage acquisition of western lands. From 1778 their activities are documented through deeds, agreements, surveys, plats, surveyors' field books, court papers, and letters related to land purchased in Harrison, Monongalia, Preston, Randolph, Tucker, and Upshur counties. Other papers concern Leonard M. Deakins (1747-1824) and his descendants. Of special significance in the collection is the compass used by Francis Deakins to survey the "Deakins Line" in 1787-1788, a north-south line separating western Maryland from (West) Virginia.

The Hoge Family was one of the earliest settlers of the New River area of southwest Virginia. William Edward Hoge and his family resided in Point Pleasant, Bland County Virginia, where William Hoge began his medicinal practice in 1855. Hoge was married to Jane L. Meek, and they had three sons and one daughter. The William E. Hoge Family Papers consist of 164 letters and 65 deeds, along with financial papers, postcards, and extensive genealogical research. The letters detail the lives of the Hoge family, specifically the children, from the 1830s through the 1880s. Several of the letters in the collection are written by Ollie Hoge, spanning from the time when she was a young girl enrolled in the Wytheville Female College to her later days as a wife and mother living in Richmond.

Indenture of bargain and sale of a tract of land in New Kent County, Virginia, from Henry Parhem and Margaret W., his wife, to Wilson Allen and Samuel Allen Apperson, 1819 August 4. Acknowledged before two magistrates the 4th day of August 1819 and certified to the Clerk of New Kent County Court. Land deed from Wilson Allen and Sophia, his wife, Samuel A. Apperson and Mary C., his wife, and Rebecca Allen of Caroline County, Virginia, to John H. Christian of New Kent County, Virginia, 1820 August 10. Presented at a court held for New Kent County the 10th day of 1820 August. 1 piece. Handwritten copy of deed enclosed. Two extracts from a memorial filed in the office of Wilson Allen, Clerk of the General Court, 1803 June 27. One is an entry of a deed of bargain and sale from William Armistead and J. Dandridge, executors of Bartholomew Dandridge to Richmond Allen, proved 14 July 1785. The other mentions that Dandridge sold to Henry Southall 146 acres of land which is supposed by Mr. Allen to be that held by Mr. Wilcox in New Kent County, Virginia. 1 piece.
