Seven letters addressing various topics, but mostly related to familial concerns, estate opportunities, the Brittish Blockade off the coast of Norfolk, and Virginia law. Many of the letters mention Williamsburg, family, and colleagues including Dr. Galt and Ellison Currie, Mary Randolph, and William Coles.

Two bound manuscript volumes containing the minutes of St. Paul's Lutheran Church from ca. 1787 to 1860. These records were photostated and bound for the purpose of furnishing the Official Board of the Church a new copy of their records. For additional information, see also Collection No. 847

One grandfather clock (97 in. tall) once owned by the Strother family of the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. According to family lore, this clock was built in 1803 by a Swiss clockmaker in Martinsburg (Virginia). David Hunter Strother (1816-1888) is a well known member of the family that owned this clock. He was an illustrator and writer for Harpers Magazine, whose pseudonym, "Porte Crayon", was a household word; he later served the Union cause, and was General Consul to Mexico within the Rutherford B. Hayes presidential administration. There are also 2 keys and 1 small hand crank. Also included in the collection are 16 .jpg photographs of the clock in the West Virginia & Regional History Center and the internal clock mechanism as well as 1 .mov video file of the clock chiming, taken during a 2014 visit to repair the clock.

Stuart family

Papers of John and Lewis Stuart, 1785-1823, and of Samuel Price, 1830-1879. Price's papers include mainly legal and business correspondence related to Price's law practice in Lewisburg, West Virginia. The Stuart papers concern settlement in Greenbrier County, land transactions, and family matters. The collection includes lawyer's fee books and account books for general merchandise, ca.1830-1880. There are also printed booklets of court briefs, pamphlets concerning "the slavery question" and railroads, and several Congressional documents.

Surveyor's Compass and Other Equipment Owned by Samuel Jackson, 1781/1860 0.5 Linear Feet 6 in. (1 flat storage box)

Jackson, Samuel
Surveyor's equipment, including compass, two rulers or protractors, and metal cable, owned by Samuel Jackson, a successful entrepreneur of western Pennsylvania. One of the rulers, bearing engravings of the initials "GW" and the year "1781", is thought to be a gift from George Washington to Samuel Jackson. The survey cable could be from the middle 19th century. Papers of Louis Bush Swisher and Mildred Lorraine (King) Swisher, friends who attended WVU in the late 1920s and married upon graduation in 1929. Includes genealogical information (collected ca. 1940s-1990s) regarding the Swisher, Bush, Jackson, Stalnaker, and Watson families, as well as five portraits of family members (ca. 1890-1910), most having dimensions of 16" x 20" (including Jacob Jackson, Pamelia Watson Jackson, Jacob Hamilton Bush, Beverly Cecelia Jackson Bush, and Louis Bush Swisher). There is also a considerable amount of WVU memorabilia from the late 1920s (apparently from Louis Bush Swisher, on evidence of annotations) including dance cards (14 items), football badges (4 items, one of which includes a small, attached three-dimensional football), and a student activity book for second semester, 1925-1926. Also present are digital copies of three land grants from Patrick Henry to Meshack Sexton from 1785 and 1786 in Frederick County, Virginia; one indenture between Jonathan Wright and Meshack Sexton from 1794; and one land grant from James Monroe to John Baylor Armistead from 1801.

Talbott-Tolbert family.
Mainly papers of Samuel T. Tolbert, a onetime constable of Lewis County and postmaster at Frenchton, who operated a general store and acted as agent and surveyor for out-of-state landowners. Included are the papers of Zadock Lanham, J.S. Wilson, John L. Jacob, and W.C. Tolbert. There are surveys, legal papers, correspondence, and lottery certificates from Ohio and Delaware, and Democratic state and county election tickets. Correspondents include Lewis Maxwell, J.M. Bennett, and F.H. Pierpont.

Tate Thompson Brady Family papers, 1785/2005 3.75 Linear Feet

This collection records the life of Tate Thomas Brady and his wife, Bonnie Fillingane and their family. Tate grew up at the Buffalo Forge estate in Rockbridge County, Virginia, greaduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg, Montgomery County, Virginia, and worked for Virginia Power Company in various positions and locations in Virginia. Most of the collection includes personal and business correspondence and papers of his family, who lived at the Buffalo Forge estate. Some of the family material includes his brother Douglas "Pat" Brady, Jr., father Douglas E. Brady, Sr., grandfather and grandmother Daniel C. E. and Emma Brady, and great grandfather Charles Patrick "Pat" Augus Brady. Most of the remainder of the collection concerns Tate and Bonnie and their families, which includes correspondence, photographs, their social life, and genealogies. Also included are papers of Sgt. Tate Brady, WWII. A record storage box of slides and books.
