Series 1- Microfilm, consists of 157 reels of microfilm. Reels 1-9 contain materials from boxes 1, 14-16, 26-30, and 44, primarily marriage, land, and bond records. The remaining reels are of various records relating to court proceedings, including execution, fee, and rule books as well as dockets (both civil and criminal). Other record books include vital records (marriage, birth, and death), taxation (land and property), and deeds. There are also a small number of records of railway and lumber companies, and a record of World War I enlisted men and officers of Braxton County.

This series includes the minutes and agendas from the Board of Visitors' meetings and is arranged in chronological order by date of meeting. Agendas list business to be discussed and resolutions to be approved. Agendas include supporting documents for each resolution. Minutes reflect business transacted at meetings, but are not verbatim transcripts. Agendas and minutes are filed together for each meeting. The series consists of copies as well as the official bound volumes of minutes. Agendas, minutes, and reports of the committees of the Board of Visitors are present. Minutes can also be found in Series 3: Correspondence and Series 4, Subseries 2: Rector's Papers, Robert Harvey Chappell Jr. Microfilm copies of minutes from 1860-1980 are available for researchers to use. The material listed as being found in Boxes 2-21 are bound volumes of the official Executive Committee and regular Board of Visitors meeting minutes. Boxes 22-48, 69-are paper copies of minutes and committee reports of the Board of Visitors from 1921 to the present. Boxes 49-68 are duplicate copies of minutes and are stored off-site. From 2002 to the present, committee agendas and minutes are in the same folder as the general meeting minutes and agenda. Series 1 contains property records, birth and death records, manuscripts, journals, correspondence, and other ephemera of the Gregory family of Kilmarnock, Scotland, later Alexandria, Virginia, USA. The series also contains late 20th century correspondence between descendants of William Gregory that discuss some of the items within this collection.

Papers, 1769-1912, including letters, 1861-1874, written to David A. Bucher, dentist of Shade Gap, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania and later, of Bridgewater, Rockingham County, Virginia The letters are from relatives and friends in Bridgewater, Virginia, Martinsburg, West Virginia, Hancock, Maryland, Orbisonia, Carlisle, McConnellsburg, Gettysburg and Round Grove, Pennsylvania and Polk City, Iowa. One letter concerns the Battle of Gettysburg. Collection also includes legal documents; voting list, 1789; delinquent tax list, 1792, of Berkeley County, Virginia [West Virginia.]; land grants; and records, 1870, of the Grand Division of Virginia Sons of Temperance.

Papers, chiefly 1917-1941, of anthropologist David Ives Bushnell, Jr., including correspondence concerning his research on Indians in North America; diaries, address lists, specimen lists, photographs, magazines, pamphlets, and maps pertaining to his work. Also includes correspondence of his mother, Belle Johnston Bushnell. The collection also contains a typescript of the journal of Rudolph Friederich Kurz; letters written by William Cullen Bryant (concerning Thanatopsis), William Henry Harrison (one concerning the death of Tecumseh), Horace Greeley (concerning Uncle Tom's Cabin), and Thomas Say; and includes two letters, 1798-1799, written to Rene Auguste Chouteau.
