The Fred W. Smith National Library includes general collections, special collections and archives as a resource for scholars, students, and those interested in George Washington, colonial America and the Revolutionary and founding eras.

The library's general collections include secondary source materials on the Washington and Custis families, and the colonial and founding eras.

The Special Collections materials highlight the lives of George and Martha Washington as well as their descendants through correspondence, financial materials, and original books from George and Martha Washington's library.

The archives of the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association holds the historic institutional records of the organization dating back to its founding in 1853.

Entitled "The historical part of the Holy Bible. Or The Old and New Testament exquisitely and accurately describ'd in near three hundred historys. Engraven by John Sturt, from designs of the greatest masters," dated 1730(?). Includes five pages of notes relating to family geneology, from Lawrence Lewis, born 4 April 1767 to Mrs. Esther Maria Lewis' death in 23 June 1885.

Mary Stead Pinckney to Martha Washington, 1799 2 pages Box 1, Folder 24

Autograph letter signed. Condolence letter from Mary Stead Pinckney, Shepherdstown, West Virginia, to Martha Washington on the death of George Washington. Pinckney also sends her regards and congratulations to Nelly Parke Custis Lewis, who was recovering from the birth of her first child, Frances Parke Lewis.

Memorandum, of Land and Dogue Run Hands, 1799 Box 15, Folder 1799.00.00

This memorandum includes totals of the land to be cultivated and that in woods, waste, etc., probably all on Dogue Run farm--list of hands on Dogue Run with their [Ages?, probably drawn up with idea of renting the farm.] Also contains statements that wheat and cattle can be had also at reasonable valuation.
