Overton family papers

Papers, 1727-1918, chiefly 1781-1875, of members of the related Overton, Ragland, Claybrooke and Hart families of Louisa County, Va. and Haywood Co., Tenn. The early papers are primarily legal documents, accounts and account books of John Ragland and Samuel Ragland and correspondence of the children of Samuel Ragland. After 1797, the collection concerns the legal and business papers of Samuel Overton, Thomas Overton, Waller Overton and Sally Overton Claybrooke. After 1810, the collection concerns the Claybrooke family in Tennessee.

The correspondence, journals and diaries, legal and financial records, estate documents, and printed ephemera in the collection primarily relate to the Washington and Custis families, the Revolutionary War, and society life in antebellum Washington D.C. and Virginia.

Account - D.S. 1 page. Account from Oct. 1786-May 1789 amounting to £11.0.4 for iron work, shoeing wheels, ox chains, repairing old stock bands, etc. Credit given of £7.18.0 for 39 1/2 baskets of wheat. Document signed, badly charred, laminated, docketed "Acct. Mr. J. Hill for Mrs. Washington".Account sworn to on Aug. 13, 1790 by Chas. C[aller ?] and receipted by Abner Vernon.

Account, Joseph Davenport with George Augustine Washington Box 13, Folder 1788.06.00

Four receipts signed by Davenport (George Washington's miller) from the Mill. An accompanying docket refers to these receipts as "Accounts of Corn and Meal delivered out of the Mill for and by the orders of G[eorge] A[ugustine] W[ashingto]n...125 Bushels Corn." Four documents signed. Name on original manuscript appears as "Jos. Davenport."

Also included is the correspondence of his father, John Robinson (including letters from William C. C. Claiborne), his brothers, Cary, Edwin, Conway and Eustace Robinson and his brother-in-law John C. R. Taylor whose letters concern plantation management. Also included are notebooks of Wirt Robinson.

The bound volume is made up of 178 pages. Pages 52-147 are blank. At some point the volume is flipped and entries are begun at the back of the book from pages 178-154. For viewing purposes those pages have been reoriented and reordered.

Richard Blow Papers

Papers, 1772-1872, of the Blow family. Chiefly business papers, 1772-1820, of Richard Blow of Portsmouth and "Tower Hill," Sussex County, Va. and his son George Blow, Sr. and George Blow, Jr. of 'Tower Hill' and Williamsburg, Va. Richard Blow was a partner in stores in Virginia and North Carolina (trading as Richard Blow and Co., Briggs & Blow, Baker & Blow [South Quay, Nansemond County, Va.], Blow & Barksdale [Petersburg, Va.], and Blow and Scammel). He was also a plantation owner that operated in part by labor of enslaved persons. He shipped the goods produced by the plantation by sea, often to European markets. His correspondence and papers during this period provide a model source on plantation management, sea trade, trade during the American Revolution, and trade during the War of 1812. Includes correspondence, plantation accounts, ship accounts, and legal papers.
