Description:
The Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) houses one of the largest and most significant collections of rare and unique materials of any educational institution of comparable size in the United States. Focused on Virginia history but with nationally and internationally important collections, the Manuscripts Collection includes letters, diaries, journals, scrapbooks, business records, organizational minutes, and other items that provide evidence of events great and small and the daily lives of Americans of all backgrounds. The Rare Books Collection, with volumes dating from the 15th century to the present, is strong in dogs, Virginia-related items, early Virginia family libraries, gardening and natural history, religion, book arts, printing history, travel, science, and medicine. The University Archives documents the history of William & Mary from 1693 to the present, including a wide range of materials from administrative records, student organization records, and alumni papers to photographs, audio-visual materials, and artifacts.

Deeds, indentures, memo, and other papers, 1778/1875 Box 1, Folder 10

Indenture of bargain and sale of a tract of land in New Kent County, Virginia, from Henry Parhem and Margaret W., his wife, to Wilson Allen and Samuel Allen Apperson, 1819 August 4. Acknowledged before two magistrates the 4th day of August 1819 and certified to the Clerk of New Kent County Court. Land deed from Wilson Allen and Sophia, his wife, Samuel A. Apperson and Mary C., his wife, and Rebecca Allen of Caroline County, Virginia, to John H. Christian of New Kent County, Virginia, 1820 August 10. Presented at a court held for New Kent County the 10th day of 1820 August. 1 piece. Handwritten copy of deed enclosed. Two extracts from a memorial filed in the office of Wilson Allen, Clerk of the General Court, 1803 June 27. One is an entry of a deed of bargain and sale from William Armistead and J. Dandridge, executors of Bartholomew Dandridge to Richmond Allen, proved 14 July 1785. The other mentions that Dandridge sold to Henry Southall 146 acres of land which is supposed by Mr. Allen to be that held by Mr. Wilcox in New Kent County, Virginia. 1 piece.

Diary and transcription, 1782/1993 Box MsV Box 142, Folder 1

Toler begins his diary as he is preparing to leave Philadelphia and take up his career as an itinerant Baptist preacher in Virginia. His education had been funded by Robert Carter of Nomini Hall, who also provided the horse Toler rode from Philadelphia and on his circuits in Virginia. Toler records his travels and the occasions when he preached or heard other preachers, usually citing the Biblical texts of the sermons. He often notes the doubts, anxieties, and hopes that occupy him as he pursues his career. In 1786 he helps establish a church at Nomini in Westmoreland County, where he becomes a more settled minister. His first child is born. 4 x 6 in., with a loose, paper cover. A few pages are missing, and the section covering 1786 begins and ends in mid-sentence. Accompanying the diary are issue 31 (1992) and issue 32 (1993) of The Virginia Baptist Register, containing a two-part transcription of Toler's diary.
