Van Hall, Historian, Microfilm Collection of Tax Records for Virginia Counties and Other Material

Van Beck Hall, a professor of history at the University of Pittsburgh, collected these records to support his research for a forthcoming book The Political Economy of Virginia, 1790-1830 [as of October 2019]. The majority of the records are on 57 reels of microfilm and contain land tax and personal property tax records for southeastern and central Virginia counties (1771-1861). Examples of counties include Caroline, Fairfax, Gloucester, Hanover, Prince George, and Stafford, among others. Miscellaneous records on 5 reels of microfilm include a report from the Virginia Library Board (1916-1917), lists of state and county officials (1780-1865), records of arms delivered (1792-1798), tobacco inspections (1795-1813), insurance declarations (1796-1821), and a doctoral dissertation about Maine's separation from Massachusetts (1966). Additionally, 3 reels of microfilm contain the Journal of the Senate of the Commonwealth of Virginia (1776-1832) and 8 reels of microfilm contain the Journal of the House of Delegates of the Commonwealth of Virginia (1790-1831).

A Calendar of The Jefferson Papers of the University of Virginia

Deeds, plats, patents, and other legal papers concerning lands in Albemarle, Fluvanna, Goochland, Henrico, and Powhatan Counties, several of which establish the chain of title to Edgehill. Deeds for land owned by the Randolph Family (Richard Randolph, Jr., Thomas Mann Randolph, Thomas Jefferson Randolph), the Eppes Family (Francis Eppes, Richard Eppes, and William Eppes), and the Nicholas Family (John Nicholas, George Nicholas, and Robert Carter Nicholas.) Jefferson items are more fully calendared under dates 6 June 1751 and 29 March 1762. [1]

Account from Oct. 1786-May 1789 amounting to £11.0.4 for iron work, shoeing wheels, ox chains, repairing old stock bands, etc. Credit given of £7.18.0 for 39 1/2 baskets of wheat. Document signed, badly charred, laminated, docketed "Acct. Mr. J. Hill for Mrs. Washington".Account sworn to on Aug. 13, 1790 by Chas. C[aller ?] and receipted by Abner Vernon.

Account, Joseph Davenport with George Augustine Washington Box 13, Folder 1788.06.00

Four receipts signed by Davenport (George Washington's miller) from the Mill. An accompanying docket refers to these receipts as "Accounts of Corn and Meal delivered out of the Mill for and by the orders of G[eorge] A[ugustine] W[ashingto]n...125 Bushels Corn." Four documents signed. Name on original manuscript appears as "Jos. Davenport."
