The Fred W. Smith National Library includes general collections, special collections and archives as a resource for scholars, students, and those interested in George Washington, colonial America and the Revolutionary and founding eras.

The library's general collections include secondary source materials on the Washington and Custis families, and the colonial and founding eras.

The Special Collections materials highlight the lives of George and Martha Washington as well as their descendants through correspondence, financial materials, and original books from George and Martha Washington's library.

The archives of the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association holds the historic institutional records of the organization dating back to its founding in 1853.

Indenture, William Thompson and George Augustine Washington, 1787 Box 11, Folder 1787.01.06

A.D.S. 1 page. Thompson agrees to "furnish Major George [A.] Washington with Thirty Barrills of Indian Corn to be delivered at his place in the Month of March next, ..." or to freight it to General Washington's mill if that is G.A.W.'s wish. If he fails in this obligation, 40 pounds Virginia currency is due.

An inventory of the furniture from John Augustine Washington's estate at Bushfield, which was divided between his wife Hannah and their two sons, Corbin and Bushrod. This document is located within Box 4 (oversized).

Journal, Samuel Vaughan, 1787 1 Volumes Drawer 21

"Minutes made by S.[amuel] V.[aughan] from Stage to Stage on a Tour to Fort Pitt or Pittsbourg in company with Mr. Michl. Morgan Obriar. from thence by S.V. only -- through Virginia Maryland and Pennsylvania." Bound, small octavo, 70-72 pages, 7 full or half page water color sketches. A printed note on tipped-in page 1 reads, 'Was bound by W. Pratt for H. [Henry] Stevens, 1861.' Includes Vaughan's visit to Mount Vernon and his sketch of the layout of the estate. Several pages have been tipped-in at the front of the volume which includes provenance and signatures of former owners.
