Allen family
Personal and business correspondence, legal papers, ledgers, family records, and other papers of the Allen family of Moorefield, Hardy County, West Virginia. Also includes papers of members of the Barr, Weibley, Taylor, and Gamble families. The majority of the collection includes personal and business correspondence, legal papers, and financial records of Judge James W.F. Allen (1813/12/03 - 1875/07/16), a Hardy County lawyer, Jacksonian Democrat, and Circuit Court Judge in Hardy and Grant Counties (active ca. 1852-1865, 1872-1875). Also includes the papers of Allen's second wife, Caroline Williams Allen (d. 1907), several of Allen's children, and other related people, and a large group of 19th century advertising memorabilia. This collection documents the research, public service, and life of Ancella Bickley, writer, educator, speaker, and historian. Includes writings, research materials, and more, focusing on the history of African Americans in West Virginia and the black experience in West Virginia. Collected research materials are predominantly facsimiles. Printed formats include correspondence, clippings, interview transcripts, typescript writings, publications, pamphlets, ephemera, speeches, articles, military records, and more. Other formats include photographs, slides, and audiocassettes.

Papers of the eighth governor of West Virginia, 1890-1893, who was an attorney in Marion County, 1863-1867, a member of the House of Delegates, 1872-1875, a circuit judge, 1878-1888. Fleming was closely associated with James O. Watson in the development of the coal and railroad industry in the Monongahela Valley. There are scattered papers, including several hundred sermons of Benjamin F. Fleming (1810-1876); one common pleas book; two "Memorandum of Decisions" books from the law firm of A.B. Fleming; and family genealogical records. Among the correspondents are J.N. Camden, H.G. Davis, A.G. Dayton, S.B. Elkins, and F.H. Pierpont.

Berkeley or Jefferson County Store Ledger .1 Linear Feet 3/4 in. (1 folder)

Account ledger of a general merchandise store in the eastern panhandle of Virginia, (later West Virginia) documenting transactions of goods purchased, services rendered as payment on accounts and balances owed. The money amounts are recorded in English currency denominations. The store was probably owned and operated by the William Brown family. Several local family names listed as patrons include Morgan, Shepherd, Hoyt, Osborne, Jones, and Richardson. There are also two loose papers; one documents a 1794 account for Alexander Brown, the other, undated, has several dollar amounts and calculations written in pencil with the Maryland towns of Frederick, Boonsboro, and Cumberland listed at the top.
