Surveyor's Compass and Other Equipment Owned by Samuel Jackson, 1781/1860 0.5 Linear Feet 6 in. (1 flat storage box)

Jackson, Samuel
Surveyor's equipment, including compass, two rulers or protractors, and metal cable, owned by Samuel Jackson, a successful entrepreneur of western Pennsylvania. One of the rulers, bearing engravings of the initials "GW" and the year "1781", is thought to be a gift from George Washington to Samuel Jackson. The survey cable could be from the middle 19th century. Suspension Bridge Illustrations, 1735/1998 Box 176

Kemp collected images of suspension bridges. This box includes originals and facsimiles of the following: drawings, photographs, engineering drawings, and correspondence. Subjects include bridges, suspension bridges, Charles Ellet Jr., John Roebling, James Finley, iron bridges, European suspension bridges, and suspension bridges in the United States (especially the Niagara Bridge, the Brooklyn Bridge, and bridges in Washington, DC and Pennsylvania).

Suspension Bridge Photographs, 1735/1983 Box 177

Kemp collected images of suspension bridges. The box includes photographic facsimiles of materials preserved in books or at other institutions. Includes photographs, engineering drawings, drawings, and maps. Subjects include suspension bridges in Asia and Europe, especially those in Germany, France and Great Britain.

Suspension Bridges and Locks and Dams, 1768/1987 Box 358

There are materials on three locks and dams in Huntington, West Virginia; French and United States suspension bridges; photos of plates from "Annales des Ponts de Chaussées" and Kemps paper "Marc Seguin and the Origins of the Modern Long Span Wire Suspension Bridge." Also, of interest is a Mason-Dixon Line map.

Taylor County Inns
Three ledger books of Pruntytown and Grafton inns, covering the period 1757-1887. The family names of the owners seem to be Clayton and Fenton. Ledger book #1: 1757-1887; Ledger book #2: 1852-54; Ledger book #3: 1852-53. The bindings are in poor condition. See inventory folder for notes on contents.

Terrill family
Digital and microfilm copies of papers of the Terrill family of Hot Springs, Bath County, Virginia, a family divided by conflicting sympathies during the American Civil War; and papers of the Porterfield family, featuring primarily those of George A. Porterfield, who married Emily Cordelia Terrill, and who commanded a Confederate force that was defeated at Philippi in western Virginia on June 3, 1861 in what became known as the "Philippi Races." There is an addendum of original copies of five William Henry Terrill letters dating from the Civil War. See scope and content note for details.
