Collections

The Jonathan Boucher papers contains correspondence. Principle correspondents include those to and from John James, James Maury, Charles Daubeny, Sir Frederick Morton Eden, William Knox, and William Stevens. Subjects include Virginia social customs and politics between the years 1759 and 1771, Boucher's experiences in, and views of, the American Revolution, Boucher's role in the struggle for unity in the Scottish Anglican Church, and his concern with schism and dissent in the Church of England.

This collection is from the Kennedy-Barton family. James Kennedy (1753-1816) was a druggist based in Alexandria and in some sources he is listed as Doctor. He also was an owner of a bookstore by the name of "Kennedy and Sons". His daughter Sarah Kennedy (1781-1834) married John Gird. She was the owner of many books in this collection, and many were gifts from her father James Kennedy. This collection also contains books owned by Benjamin Barton. See also "Vertical File Bio. The Laine family papers (1772-1961; 0.8 cubic feet) contains letters and documents about hiring enslaved people, other family correspondence, and financial and legal papers related to the Laine (sometimes Lane) family in Sussex County, Virginia. There is also a letter and information about the War of 1812. Also of interest is the correspondence and church programs for Amos Lloyd Laine who was a minister in Wakefield, Virginia.

This collection includes copies and originals of 18th and 19th century land grants for acreage in Rockbridge County, Augusta County, Bath County, and other areas in southwestern Virginia. Three folders relate to the Borden land grant, which established Rockbridge County. There is a fragment of an undated, handwritten copy of the Borden land grant. Other folders related to the Borden grant include historical analysis and recounting of the development of the grant by E.P. Tompkins. Some land grants pre-date the Borden grant. Folders with the parenthetical note of "Copy" only include photocopies of the original land grants. The Trimble land grants can be found in oversized drawer 33.

This collection consists of approximately 50 unrelated manuscripts (1744-1908). The items, primarily autograph letters, were purchased at various times by the Lee-Jackson Foundation. Many items date from the Civil War and bear the signatures of Civil War era notables.

This collection consists of a variety of legal documents related to citizens of Rockbrige County. Includes indentures, bonds, materials related to wills, legal agreements, and insurance policies amongst other documents.

This collection (47 items) consists of two series. The first series contains records (1702-1814; 17 items) related to the Virginia Militia, including regimental returns for various militia units. This material pre-dates the establishment of the state arsenal in Lexington, Virginia, but the documents were found among Lexington Arsenal records. Two of the documents date from the British colonial period (1702). The second series (1819-1839; 30 items) contains items concerning the operation of the state arsenal in Lexington. Included are payrolls and other financial records, guard returns and muster rolls, and two enlistment documents.
