The Fred W. Smith National Library includes general collections, special collections and archives as a resource for scholars, students, and those interested in George Washington, colonial America and the Revolutionary and founding eras.

The library's general collections include secondary source materials on the Washington and Custis families, and the colonial and founding eras.

The Special Collections materials highlight the lives of George and Martha Washington as well as their descendants through correspondence, financial materials, and original books from George and Martha Washington's library.

The archives of the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association holds the historic institutional records of the organization dating back to its founding in 1853.

Entitled "The historical part of the Holy Bible. Or The Old and New Testament exquisitely and accurately describ'd in near three hundred historys. Engraven by John Sturt, from designs of the greatest masters," dated 1730(?). Includes five pages of notes relating to family geneology, from Lawrence Lewis, born 4 April 1767 to Mrs. Esther Maria Lewis' death in 23 June 1885.

Williams, Morley Jeffers, 1886-1977

The collection consists of correspondence, reports, surveys, newspaper clippings, biographies and other written works, bibliographies, excerpts from diaries, letters, inventories and ledgers, various types of architectural and archaeological drawings, maps, and images documenting the work and research conducted during Morley Jeffers Williams's tenure at George Washington's Mount Vernon. Williams compiled the majority of the documents and images found in this collection between 1931 and 1939; however, the information contained within these records dates from 1602 to 1967. The bulk of the collection consists of numerous architectural and archaeological drawings detailing past and contemporary views of George Washington's estate; furthermore, there are several drawings depicting possible future renovations to Mount Vernon. This collection also contains a large amount of scholarly research pertaining to George Washington, Mount Vernon, and 18th-century life and culture. This information provides an in-depth understanding of George Washington's life, particularly concerning his interactions with his estate. Other documentation charts the efforts of Morley Jeffers Williams as he worked to restore the structures and landscape at Mount Vernon.

Order of council concerning George Washington's formal petition on behalf of himself and other veterans of the French and Indian War to receive the 200,000 acres of land promised by Governor Dinwiddie in the Proclamation of 1754. The council has approved the petition and the petitioners will be allowed five years to survey their grants. The docket is in Washington's writing, titled 'Order of Council 15th December 1769.
