Papers, 1727-1918, chiefly 1781-1875, of members of the related Overton, Ragland, Claybrooke and Hart families of Louisa County, Va. and Haywood Co., Tenn. The early papers are primarily legal documents, accounts and account books of John Ragland and Samuel Ragland and correspondence of the children of Samuel Ragland. After 1797, the collection concerns the legal and business papers of Samuel Overton, Thomas Overton, Waller Overton and Sally Overton Claybrooke. After 1810, the collection concerns the Claybrooke family in Tennessee.

This collection consists of an account book kept by the Washington and Custis families. The account book is stained and faded, having been buried during the American Civil War. It consists of 36 leaves containing George Washington's formal record of the settlement of the Daniel Parke Custis estate and of his guardianship of his stepchildren, John Parke and Martha Parke Custis and are in Washington's handwriting, 1761-1773. It also provides the inventories and proposed division of the Daniel Parke Custis estate submitted to the General Court in October 1759. Six leaves include estate accounts for Augustine Washington and are in the hand of Thomas Jett, 1766-1771.

This collection contains an accounting booklet of rents paid by Samuel and Thomas Rankin and others to a Thomas Bateson of Londonberry, Irelandand others. Clues in the booklet suggest that a flour mill was being rented. At some point the account book was sent to the Wilson family of Rockbridge County, Virginia. The collection includes contemporary notes on the booklet as well as acquisition information.

Webb-Prentis Family Papers, 1735-1942

This collection, consisting of ca. 1300 items and 29 bound volumes, (4 boxes, 1 oversize folder, 1.5 linear shelf feet), is an addition to the papers of the Webb and Prentis families given to the Library on 24 November 1972 (accession number 4136), and contains papers of the relaated Dardens, Allen, and Riddick families, all of Suffolk, Nansemond County, and of Williamsburg, Virginia. The collection spans the years 1735 to 1942, but the bulk of the papers date from ca. 1850 to 1890. Most of the papers relate to members of the above families who lived in uffolk, with only a few papers pertaining to the branch of the Prentis familywhich resided in Williamsburg.
