Benjamin Kissam papers, 1755/1776

These manuscript volumes reveal a great deal about Benjamin Kissam's practice, and provide a window on the legal world in New York City on the eve of the American Revolution. The ledger was kept from 1755 to 1776, and contains accounts of clients, both individual and corporate, relatives, servants, and other lawyers. Although there is no mention of John Jay, this ledger was in use during the period of Jay's clerkship with Kissam. His clients ranged across the social spectrum, and he sometimes noted their places of residence or occupations. Since he kept thorough and detailed records for these accounts, the great number of blanks on the credit side suggests that many of them were never settled. Occasionally, he noted that he would never be paid for a certain account. In transactions involving family members and employees, he kept careful records of money spent or advanced and funds repaid.

Deeds, plats, patents, and other legal papers concerning lands in Albemarle, Fluvanna, Goochland, Henrico, and Powhatan Counties, several of which establish the chain of title to Edgehill. Deeds for land owned by the Randolph Family (Richard Randolph, Jr., Thomas Mann Randolph, Thomas Jefferson Randolph), the Eppes Family (Francis Eppes, Richard Eppes, and William Eppes), and the Nicholas Family (John Nicholas, George Nicholas, and Robert Carter Nicholas.) Jefferson items are more fully calendared under dates 6 June 1751 and 29 March 1762. [1]

Webb-Prentis Family Papers, 1735-1942

This collection, consisting of ca. 1300 items and 29 bound volumes, (4 boxes, 1 oversize folder, 1.5 linear shelf feet), is an addition to the papers of the Webb and Prentis families given to the Library on 24 November 1972 (accession number 4136), and contains papers of the relaated Dardens, Allen, and Riddick families, all of Suffolk, Nansemond County, and of Williamsburg, Virginia. The collection spans the years 1735 to 1942, but the bulk of the papers date from ca. 1850 to 1890. Most of the papers relate to members of the above families who lived in uffolk, with only a few papers pertaining to the branch of the Prentis familywhich resided in Williamsburg.

Manuscript Volume 12. Account book for 1752-1774 with farm and medical accounts of Dr. William Cabell (1699-1774). Dr. William Cabell was a justice and surveyor for Goochland, Va. and Albemarle, Va. as well as a farmer and practicing physician and surgeon.

Notebook of Nicholas Cabell and others, 1750/1779 Box 10

22 pages. Manuscript Volume 6. Notebook in multiple hands, one being Nicholas Cabell's (1750-1803). Based in Amherst, Va., Cabell was a notable Virginia politician in the latter half of the 18th century. Notebook contents include merchants' arithmetic problems and various memoranda and notes on accounts, debts, writs, prices, and wights. Dates in the notebook include 1750 and 1779.
