This collection contains two handwritten commonplace books compiled by two generations of lawyers in Bedale, Yorkshire, Charles and Thomas Frankland. Three of the functions of these volumes appear to be: to have available all information relevant to Frankland property (land, debtors, etc.); to have available a wide range of legal information, precedents, cases, forms of words, etc.; and to have available information about important clients and matters affecting the district (tithes, enclosure, etc.). The Charles Campbell papers consist of papers received or collected by Charles Campbell (1807-1876), Virginia historian. The papers fall into four general headings: historical papers collected by Charles Campbell, correspondence, manuscript volumes, and miscellaneous. These include personal and professional correspondence as well as eighteenth century documents collected by Charles Campbell, newspaper clippings, diaries, scrapbooks, and notebooks, covering then period 1743-1896. The papers reflect Charles Campbell's interests in history, teaching, newspaper editing, railroad engineering, politics, genealogy, publication of his works, and the town of Petersburg where he lived for most of his life.

This autograph and miscellany collection created by Christian Sixtus Hutter consists of miscellaneous material ranging from circa 1602 to 1945 and includes autographs, correspondence, government documents, financial and legal documents, military documents, and telegrams, chiefly from the United States and Great Britain, but also including some material from continental Europe. While most of the collection is in the English language, there are a number of documents in French, German, Spanish, and Dutch. This material was formerly stored in the Hutter cabinets when Special Collections was located in Alderman Library, and consists of material which could not be matched with known Hutter accession numbers. Autographs include those of royalty, such as George I, George III, and George IV; theologians, ministers, and religious leaders; nobility, chiefly English; jurists, lawyers, and judges; family correspondence; and public officials.

Printed maps, circa 1675-1918, collected by Col. John Womack Wright pertaining to his interest in military events in Europe chiefly in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The collection primarily concerns the cartography of areas in France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, and Italy. The collection includes examples of the work of Willem Janszoon Blaeu, Guillaume de L'Isle, Johann Baptist Homann, Tobias Conrad Lotter, Placide de Saint Helene, John Senex, George Mattheus Seutter the Older; and Nikolaus Visscher II. Also includes notebook, 1919; and a publication of the American Geographical Society, 1924.

Scope and Content: This collection was originally assembled by Esther Maria Lewis Chapin, who inherited some of the Washington and Custis papers but was also an avid collector. She reassembled family materials that were being dispersed nationwide, much of which was purchased at Anderson Galleries, sale 22001, 28-29 November 1927. The collection contains correspondence, legal documents, and financial records related primarily to the Custis and Lewis families. Much of the financial and legal materials focus on the construction of the New Tomb at Mount Vernon, as well as settling George Washington's estate.The dates of the material in this collection ranges from 1743-1852, with the bulk of the material dating between 1818-1829.
